Discussion: House Dems Ramp Up Pressure For Independent Russia Investigation

Some will deride this as just another fruitless attempt by a weak minority to get some headlines, but in these perilous times efforts like this are valuable even when they fail, because they force the Republicans to face–if only for a moment at a time–the consequences of what they are allowing to happen.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wrote: “The question remains: what do the Russians have on President Trump financially, politically and personally that he and Republicans in Congress want to hide?”

This. Every hour, every day, and most importantly - every channel.

Good on Amash, I can’t stand the guy but you know he’s asking for a lot of pain from his partisans for committing the heinous crime of doing the right thing.

I certainly don’t mind contacting my worthless congresscritter (Valadao) to let him know I’d like him to support this.

Get the repubcritters on the record. Call the vote weekly.

I really want to see more billboards out there. Something like:

“What do the Republicans not want us to know about Trump-Russia?”

The Democrats are doing everything they can on this issue, and doing it very smartly I think. It should be obvious to an outside observer that they are far more responsible than the Republicans, and help a lot in 2018.

Though, the left wing cries of “there is no difference” may still ring out, in spite of the obvious idiocy behind it.

Really an excellent idea. It’s retro - so it draws attention just for that. It’s cheap compared to T.V. ( that people will actually see) and it’s subliminal. There’s no escaping it. And it gets on the local news just for existing.

And it would reach voters and citizens who would otherwise ignore news stories, since everything is fake news, right? It’s another way to get the message out that can’t be shot down as readily or quickly. I mean, after all, how many billboards have been out there, particularly in the south, with respect to anti-abortion messages, no?

As I wrote in another comment I believe the Democrats who know and are in a position to do something about it are moving very deliberately. Pelosi would be in the know as one of the Gang of 8 (she was pale coming out of a briefing a while back, yes?)

IMHO they’re not just thinking about taking down Trump but 2018 and 2020. And if they’re really playing an Obama-esque long game then they’re thinking how they can use #TrumpRussia to destroy the GOP for at least a generation including down into the states - render it toxic even as a regional party.

At least I hope so - a generation without obstruction is about how long we’ll need to restore our democracy after a generation of GOP efforts to tear it down.

So everything they do to get Republicans on record as opposing any efforts to investigate #TrumpRussia is FTW.

But the move is unlikely to succeed

True. But every Rethugliklan will now be on record as supporting
the most dangerous, corrupt regime in American history.

And when they do I’ll be sending each of them a commemorative hat and T-shirt.

I hope they’re not using an 'Obama-esque long game." Obama left the Democratic Party in ruins, perhaps for a generation. I am glad that Pelosi is doing this, but the House Democrats need new Leadership. Nancy “Impeachment is off the table” Pelosi has been around too long, and is more of a liability to the Democratic brand than an asset.

Yes, I applaud for her making sure to include “Republicans in Congress” there – with their obstruction they are already fully complicit, but word further has it that the RICO case can take them down as well.

“The question remains: what do the Russians have on President Trump financially, politically and personally that he and Republicans in Congress want to hide?”

Isn’t that a distraction from the real question: Why did Hillary Clinton have a private email server?

At some point – unless Our Supreme Leader’s Supreme Grandchildren are still in office 50 years from now – there will be a point where " voted against investigating Donald Trump" will make a really effective billboard.

render it toxic even as a regional party.[/quote]

I’m not seeing it. I think it will always be the party of the deeply entrenched white supremacist male voter and their families for as long as that exists. I have no optimism of this party dying off. I have no optimism over their supporters fading away. Nothing will shake their narrative that this nation belongs to them and them alone and everyone else can just leave. The GOP will always be the party of that line of thought.

it is stunning from a pure poli sci/electoral angle that the repubes would be so willing to sacrifice two fundamental electoral positions that have, for whatever reason, been attributed to the repube party for as long as I can remember, the “moral high ground” (after voting for and supporting tRUmp, nobody can claim moral high ground anymore, just get laughed out of the place, “you supported president pussy grabber, why should anyone listen to you about family values?”) and national security (no need for elaboration)

I suggested to my wife (who is the only person who can stand listening to me, and that may be just because of proximity) that perhaps the repubes understand the pending demographic shift of the electorate away from their strength (old white folks) will mean long term electoral pain, and they have to grab as much as they can in the current environment.

I have a strong suspicion that the old electoral playing field will no longer be relevant heading forward when the light is shed on the depth of corruption we are about to witness, the old rules may no longer apply

How long until the town halls begin this chant?

How long before the WH press briefings begin this chant?
