Discussion: House Dems Outraged After GOPers Switch Votes To Defeat LGBT Measure

Seems like a blunder to me. I doubt many people would have blinked at their usual and casual discrimination, but this brought attention to it.

Now people see that the GOPers don’t actual vote based on values and the merits of something, but only if they have political cover.

When one Member calls colleagues ‘bigots and cowards’ in writing, as did Rep. Mahoney, further calling actions ‘hateful’ and ‘shameful,’ and then the names of said ‘bigots and cowards’ are released publicly, I would suppose that the result has got to be a little frosty feeling in the House cafeteria.

This is where it gets real. LGBT rights, abortion rights, privacy rights, equal pay measures, meaningful gun safety regulation, etc., etc. There is bullshit pique over real and imagined slights over process. Then there are the real nuts and bolts of the stuff that hurts, demeans and economically deprives Americans.

Well, there’s the BernieBro’s.

Ryan knew nothing about it, yet the GOP leadership held the vote open longer than allotted. Who could do that Mr. Ryan??

I’m a Bernie supporter and I think the house acted in a despicable fashion. I also think this name calling is pretty despicable. Sanders and Sanders supporters are pro LBGT rights as are Clinton and her supporters. I’m very glad they both came out into the light on this one and we should celebrate something we agree on. You’re better than this, @chammy

And the 25% of Clinton supporters who told that same poll that they would never vote for Sanders in the general if he were the nominees? And the 30% of Clinton supporters in 2008 who said it about Obama? The vast majority of everyone on the Democratic side will form up around the nominee in November and those who don’t are complete idiots and I don’t want them on my team.

Then there is the GOP sleight of hand.

The Bush financial meltdown became Obama’s.

Plants that closed in mid 2008 somehow remained open until Obama’s inauguration.

Iraq was all good until Obama.

No embassies or consulates were attacked prior to January 20, 2009.

Sorry, I’m a Bernie supporter too and I have to say fuck you. I know full well how damaging a Republican prez would be and how much difference there is between parties. I’ll never vote libertarian or green or republican or anything other than Dem. Bernie is my Dem of choice, but if he ain’t the Nom, I’m voting Blue in November. Hillary is a neo-liberal, but I’ll still vote for her rather than burn the whole place down. I don’t appreciate you calling me an idiot though, so fuck off.e

So, what does this mean? Will Obama veto? Will his executive order applicable to federal contractors remain in force? This was all despicable before, but it hurts even worse when you’ve got skin in the game.

WTF is the deal with “switching votes” anyway?

Once discussion is closed, votes should be binding. Bullshit rule no matter who dies it. And that includes Harry “Dry Powder” Reid.

Then they will accuse the President of hating the troops.

It was an amendment directed at defense contractors. Soulnd to me like the defense budget was an appropriate place for it.

Hillary supporter here. That’s a bullshit unfair broad characterization. Some Bernie supporters may feel that way, but I think you will find most of them voting blue this fall.

But I still appreciate the rest of your sentiment.

I suspect they are so out of practice at taking votes that they don’t even know how to follow the rules. #GetBackToWork

How despicable are Republican lawmakers at the State and Federal level? In Oklahoma state Republicans passed a law to make it a felony for a Doctor to perform a legal abortion. Then in Washington, the House Republicans slip language that allows discrimination against LGBTQ employees into defense legislation to oppose an Obama executive action. Let’s allow discrimination to score points against the President — how low is this type of moral development by these members. Well, not low enough. Today, when an amendment restoring non-discriminatory policy affecting defense contractors was going to pass. Republicans refused to gavel the votes cast under the allotted time, and allowed members to change their votes, once the amendment failed by one vote, the gavel came down and the vote was now final. When Speaker Ryan was asked about this he pleaded ignorance. Ignorant and Immoral — that’s the Republican legacy.

When asked about Republican members switching their votes, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) told reporters he didn’t know anything about it.

Of course he didn’t. Because “decentralized.”
