And they are not alone in their disappointment.
I love it when Schumer and Pelosi play “good cop/bad cop.” :]
So basically the dems in the senate is telling the dems in house your own your own…I guess we now know nancy pelosi isnt the dem we should be worry about…it looks like it will be chuck schumer
The house had the votes to pass this last time… They will pass it now… Trump has to sign… THEN Mitch must make good on his promise. If not Schumer has to oppose anything McConnell wants. If Mitch makes good, then this was a good thing… if not, and Schumer and the Ds stick it to them for the rest of the session, and hang it around the neck of everyone who has an R next to their name then it was probably the best we could hope for.
Let’s see what happens / doesn’t happen before February 8th…
Oh, for fuck’s sake, get a grip. Good grief, who needs Republicans when there are so many dumbass Dems throwing bombs from the purity left?
I think I saw that movie. Wasn’t it Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and are we now the Black Knight?
“Progressives”, you will fix this problem when you win an election and roll DACA into a reconciliation bill if necessary. Not before.
It doesn’t matter even if McConnell makes good on his promise…in fact I largely suspect he will. Because Ryan won’t even consider bringing such a bill up for vote. So it dies in the House upon being received.
What this does is effectively kill any DACA bill before the next CR/appropriations bill comes up in three weeks. Its off of McConnell’s plate now, with just token lip service.
The Firebagger Dilemma:
"If I disagree with Schumer, then I align myself with Pelosi.
But if I disagree with Pelosi, then I align myself with Schumer.
Which one should I trash?
For G-d’s sake – Bernie, Jill, Susan – help me!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
(Head explodes.)
I don’t think it will be as bad as the doom and gloom folks in here think. What do we want? A 100% political victory or an improvement in peoples lives? Even if it means and improvement and not perfect. I don’t believe the GOP, even in its current configuration, is going to run against the grain of 80 % of the American people. I doub’t they round up 800,000 DACA kids and throw them out of the country. Take CHIP…get DACA as a pure bill.
What would you have done if you were Chuck Schumer?
Stuck to my guns, and held out for an inclusion of the DACA legislation as part of the CR.
Basicly all they have done is kicked the can down the road, in 3 weeks we will be back in the same mess.
And get the shit beat out of you by the media. Put the kibosh on Democratic momentum heading into the midterms and end up with your back against the wall.
For how long? Another 9 days? That’s when CHIP funds were scheduled to run out.
Not getting DACA dealt with while getting essentially nothing in return isn’t going to great things for morale heading into the midterms, either.
Looking back at the whole sequence, I would probably have suggested being honest from the beginning and not pretending that we had leverage that we didn’t have, or didn’t plan to use. Instead, they greatly raised expectations, and then crushed them. (That is fine if they can manage to do it to Republicans, but not if they only managed to do it to Democrats.)
Lindsay Graham’s Dreamer’s Act is hardly radical legislation and Democrats seem ok with the granting of “conditional” permanent residence. The deeper problem is regularizing immigration policy. The US population has increased by more than 100 times since the country’s creation , while the French population has only about doubled in the same 240 year period. As citizens, we have an obligation to say what size of population we desire. Maybe we want more people than China or maybe fewer people like Mongolia, but we should have some demographic framework. If we continue on the current trajectory the US population would be 30 billion in another 240 years.
