Discussion: House Dems Divided Over Giving Pregnant Colleague Proxy Vote

Discussion for article #230325

So propose a change the fucking rule instead of forming a circular firing squad or going after Pelosi or whoever for following the rules, you fucking morons. Do we have to pet your hands and explain everything to you so you donā€™t fly into hissy fits AT EACH OTHER all the time? Half the time, itā€™s like you want nothing more than to destroy each other instead of focusing on bringing down the GOP/Teatrolls and their abominable agenda.

"The fact is that itā€™s really important to be here, to be in caucus. Itā€™s more important to vote on the floor. If I were to make a fight, Iā€™d vote to have a proxy vote on the floor than in whateverā€™s going on in the caucus.ā€

I have no fucking idea what Pelosi is trying to say, but it seems like sheā€™s directly contradicting herself in two successive sentences.

If it was John Boehner making this same decision, progressives and Democrats would be all over his ass in high moral dudgeon. The fact that Pelosi seems blitheringly unaware of how bad the optics are in this situationā€”even a hack like Wasserman-Schultz can discern the larger pictureā€”is indicative of why Democrats just canā€™t do the politics thing right in Congress. If I were Priebus, Iā€™d be all over FauxNoise castigating the Democrats for giving a cold shoulder to amputee Iraq war vets in their own party.

A big part of successful retail politics is not ever giving your opponents a club to hit you over the head with, especially if the matter at hand isnā€™t hugely important from a policy perspective. If youā€™re going to take heat from your opposition, make fucking sure itā€™s over important stuff, like Keystone. If Pelosi had bent the rules for a pregnant Iraq war vet who lost her legs in service to our country, she looks good. Instead, she looks like a dick.

Jon Stewart skewered Pelosi last night over this. He suggested it was because Duckworth had supported a rival of Pelosiā€™s over some trivial matter. I remember that, after becoming Speaker, Pelosi passed over Jane Harman for Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, on which Harman had worked for years, in favor of John Murtha, who ultimately was disgraced for his financial dealings. Very strange goings on.

I dunnoā€¦why donā€™t you tell us more of whatā€™s written on your trolling script first, Captain Sockpuppet?

The Democratic Party, the party of women, the party of inclusion has dropped the ball. The members of the House that caucus Democratic should be allowed to change the rules for situations like this. It is time to review and renew the partyā€™s ideals, this way when situations like this occur, it will be easier for women to vote for the party leadership.

As is always the case when media wants to demonize Nancy Pelosi, thereā€™s much more to the story. Tammy Duckworth was willing to show a gracefulness her fellow supporters of Frank Pallone over Anna Eshoo were not after he lost his race to become ranking mbr on Energy and Commerce.

Your post makes no sense.
You accuse Democrats of continuing a war on women despite the election resultsā€¦
First, define how Democrats have ā€œcontinued the war on womenā€. Was that by wanting legislation changed so they can get equal pay for equal work?
Having access to birth control?
Insuring stay at home moms get same benefits they had when they temporarily leave their workforce?
Protecting their right to choose?

You then ask about the ā€œhopeā€. Not sure what that means in the context you are speaking ofā€¦
If you on one had say things have continued despite the loss, why are you asking if thatā€™s the change?
I mean, you all have been whining about all this stuff that Obama has done while president. Yet you are in the same breath suggesting there has been no changeā€¦? Really?

As is often the case when Stewart thinks he can look like the only reasonable person in the Country or demonize Pelosi, he failed to mention this devolved into a slippery slope argument;
"
According to a Democratic aide in the room during the debate, a pivotal moment came when Rep. Gwen Moore spoke out to ask whether she could proxy vote as well because she plans to attend a funeral in Wisconsin next Tuesday.
Mooreā€™s request soured the mood of the room against Duckworthā€™s motion, the aide said, ā€œwith Members realizing the slippery slope argument that others had made.ā€ Schakowsky then pulled her motion for Duckworth."

First rule of the internet: never get involved in a conversation with someone who uses that icon. Itā€™s pointless.

Its the same old same old, Oh, lets not anger the republicans,
Oh, please mister Priebus, donā€™t be mean to us, weā€™re just a bunch
of cowardly, timorous, wee beasties!

Honestly I donā€™t see the problem with proxy votes, for any reason, in leadership elections like this. Theyā€™re fundamentally different from votes on bills in the House.

No. She is saying that the caucus rules on proxy voting come from the floor rules, and that a change in the floor rules would be the meaningful change.
