I think I see a non-negotiable flaw here.

Our local police and fire departments recently visited my son’s preschool during “Public-Safety Week”. For days, he kept asking why the police needed armored personnel carriers (“those big trucks with the bullet-proof tops”).

I could only tell him that they didn’t; that grownups sometimes believe foolish things out of fear; and that police would never, ever use tanks in our idyllic, affluent suburb.

I could’ve told him how the money wasted on those macho toys could be better spent keeping us safe by adequately funding police and fire pensions, or by restoring cuts to public after-school programs, or even by expanding Medicaid.

But if the grown adults we elect can’t understand that, then a preschooler probably can’t either…

Well we all know how the GOP in Congress will respond to this. Nothing. Nothing will happen. If the Senate takes it up. filibuster. If the House takes it up, Boehner will squash it under Hastert Rule. But Johnson is right. If what’s going on in Ferguson doesn’t make it clear that the police are militarized, then I don’t know how clearer it has to be.

Maybe they won’t use them in your “idyllic” neighborhood, but maybe yours isn’t filled with black folks?

And this will be met with a shrug and a few speeches. Sadly.

EXCELLENT IDEA!

We will know as this unfolds just which of our representatives really represents us or unreasonable authority.

Everyone reading this should post it to Facebook and network it around, so it gets more legs than a millipede and the media can’t stop it from unfolding. This should go viral.

I think some of that equipment is sold dirt cheap. The military is just trying to unload.
Better it should be melted down into plowshares or iPads or something.

or it may go viral on social media because it is time…

Good for him. But Hank Johnson a ‘no name’ Democrat, right, while Rand Paul gets headlines by saying we must demilitarize the police, without, as yet, doing anything about it. Only celebrities get celebrity treatment even as they are much lesser being. And Hank Johnson’s name doesn’t make the headline.

McCaskill also called for de-militarizing the police.

Hey, give a guy a tank, or some teargas, or rubber bullets to play with… you expect him to PASS on that???

" . . . it behooves us to reign in the Pentagon’s 1033 program and revisit the merits of a militarized America."

How come so many people don’t know the difference between “rein” and “reign”?

So does the Boner let it get a vote so the Republicans can use it to demagogue on racial fear, or does he squelch it because LaPierre will see it as making the inevitable and necessary revolution of Real Americans easier and order his sock puppets and the Teatards to vote for it?

You are meddling with the primal forces of nature, Representative Johnson!

You want to stop the Army from giving away tanks to police forces?
Where do those tanks come from, we don’t grow them out of the soil, we build them. People build them and they get paid and they pay for things that other workers make and cycle continues. If you want to stop giving tanks away those people will become unemployed. No more tanks, no more jobs.

Why are you trying to hurt the working person?

In the manner of Arthur Jensen.
