“Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?” — Jolly Old Ebenezer Republican

Wikipedia has six citations to support the sentence:

There is a strong current within anarchism which does not believe that anarcho-capitalism can be considered to be a part of the anarchist movement due to the fact that anarchism has historically been an anti-capitalist movement and for definitional reasons which see anarchism as incompatible with capitalism.

Make no mistake, for all their belief that the state should do nothing to aid the afflicted, Republicans subscribe to both capitalism and social hierarchy, neither of which is compatible with anarchism, and even the latter of which is not really compatible with anarcho-capitalism.

The Appellate Court struck down the North Carolina Voter ID law because “The new provisions target African Americans with almost surgical precision” and “impose cures for problems that did not exist.”

I have a high degree of confidence that the GOP could bring its expertise to bear in the area of drug testing.

Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?" We don’t have workhouses Speaker Ryan? Damn we have to create billions of dollars of tax credits to fund private sector run workhouses run by the Trump Corporation at Trump Towers. Putin will provide security.

I wouldn’t mind it going to the Senate, since as it stands now they couldn’t get it passed even in reconciliation, it is so toxic. Make them all vote in favor of it in the House, then let it die in the Senate. Then use those House votes to go after them hard next year, with clips of the people in the town halls up against the CSPAN footage of the “aye” votes.

So let me get this right: if you get laid off from your low-wage job, unless you can prove to the satisfaction of a hostile bureaucrat that you’re still “deserving”, you lose access to medical coverage when you need it most. Brilliant.

Even more cruelty is necessary to buy their votes.

For conservatives, poverty and temporary misfortune are no fun if you can’t watch people grovel for crumbs.

By the way, America Firsters, conservatives plan to give more money out to foreign countries in aid, and Donald Trump wants to help Russia make more money off Americans too.

Are we seeing a Jubilation T. Cornpone strategy at work here? (yeah, invoking an Al Capp character dates me, but this is politics). What the House Conservatives may be angling for is not to impose this or that onerous and mean-spirited new requirement. A Cornpone validates himself by defeat, and by having someone else around to blame it on.

They will never say so, but the status quo may suit that gang well enough. The red county proletariat depends on the principles of “Obamacare” more than any other element in America. It needs the reality while luxuriating in rejection of the name. So its chosen politicians are left with the job of working up a grievance and charging over the cliff with it, banners flying high.

Perhaps Steve Bannon has thought of this already and the prize he is after for in this situation is Paul Ryan’s head. A good result or a bad one?

Only because they stamped their little feet, and threatened to hold their breath.

This is Republican “governance” at work. :rage:

I worry that the conservatives are getting a little soft here. Shouldn’t there be some kind of provision that before receiving Medicaid you have to have your head shoved in a toilet?
