Discussion: House Adjourns Until July As Dem Sit-In Over Gun Control Continues

I saw this paragraph in a WaPo article and had to laugh.

“During the sit-in, the cameras normally used for C-SPAN broadcasts, which are controlled by the House [Republicans], were turned off, and so were the microphones. While it’s against House rules to take photos or video on the floor, C-SPAN carried footage via the livestreams from members’ smartphones.”

That pesky modern technology thwarting the Rethugliklan’s best intentions once again. Now the Dems will “own” C-SPAN over the entire break.

Republican lawmakers, by and large, are dark horrid creatures that need to be taken down. Politically-speaking … of course.

They held votes on Thursday morning? At 6am? Really?

Well, if they wanted to go on vacation…

Yeah, I caught that as well. Were they there this morning? – All of them? I thought the 'Thugs managed to recess until July.

The Democrats are starting to show their good and true colors again – Progressive colors! I’m glad.

I’m guessing the author misunderstood the situation.

This is all fun to watch, but this has nothing to do with getting these bills passed. There is zero chance either of them would make it out of the House, much less pass the Senate.

Ryan is annoyed because the dems are trying to force the House GOP into going on the record as voting against popular and modest gun control measures in an election year. It’s a little bit cynical, but I guess it’s always worked like that.

I agree that it’s pretty unlikely these bill would pass either chamber – but I personally feel it’s imperative to get lawmakers on record on these issues, especially now that we’re in an election year. It’s not my preference, but it’s the bare minimum the lawmakers should do: Go on record what they do or do not support. Let the chips fall where they may.

Hoyer left The floor at 3 am, so the vote probably occurred at about 2 am.

What’s the reason for adjourning until July 5, 2016?

I’m shocked–SHOCKED–that a Wisconsin Republican would preside over such a clumsy attempt to pass things in the dark.

I think 1) that it gives members an opportunity to go home and show how much they love…really LOVE America (Americans not so much…but America yeah!) and 2) raise campaign cash. Now adjourning EARLY? Well, those commie, socialist, Democrats wanted them to DO something and they are averse to that.

Terrorists can buy guns without any background check.

The Republican response? Time to go play with their mistresses.

Disagree. This has everything to do with getting these bills passed. Ryan probably won’t bring them up for a vote in this Congress, but if voters end his speakership these bills can be brought up for a vote in the next Congress. This kind of thing puts pressure on those couple dozen congresspersons in swing districts and districts Obama won. They’ve already got to answer for every burp and fart from Trump’s mouth. Here’s just another example of their ineffectiveness.

CSPAN made sure everyone knew the GOP were trying to censor. They added a banner to the bottom of the periscope feed with something to that effect. I think they were a bit miffed

Yep. Keeping Congress from starting vacation was intentional and pre-planned. Our local Rep. Scott Peters let us know this was coming via facebook  This has been a big issue for him

The House is focused on eliminating terrorists, not constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens

In our view, targeting citizens based on their religion is the proper way to ensure the Constitutional rights of all.

You seem to have a little bit of knowledge about this. Too bad you can’t bring the Democratic leadership in the House up to speed. They’ll probably just blunder along without your wisdom. Thanks for sharing.
