Ignore President Pussygrab and pass the most fair bill you can. A truly bipartisan effort would likely get enough votes from both sides in the House so you could ignore the alt-right xenophobes, even if it means Louie Gohmert is sad.
You could throw in enough change to allow Der TrumpenfĂźhrer to put a big glowing TRUMP sign on his pretend wall and maybe a non-binding resolution that he has a large penis. Heâll sign immediately.
Of course for this to work, you will have to lock Mitch McConnell in a closet.
Tyler Houlton, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, insisted in a statement that the cancelation was âa scheduling issue, nothing more.â
Probably due to more Stormy weather in DC. Thereâs been a lot of that lately.
Iâm sure any âunspecified scheduling and logistical issuesâ could quickly be resolved by a ânumber of nights at a DC hotelâ followed by an unannounced trip to Florida.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a lead sponsor of the 2013 bill, is not on board, and has criticized the bipartisan negotiations and advocated for a much more conservative approach that includes cutting family-based immigration.
Hmm some one whoâs family and community benefited from family-based immigration is now opposed to to it for others
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), meanwhile, has taken a stance even further to the right than the White House, vowing to vote against anything that grants a path to citizenship for any group of undocumented immigrants.
Wasnât there something about his fatherâs path to US citizen that wasnât kosher?
Just a thought about gerrymandering so one political party can pick their voters and exclude others in the House, the hardliners are never going to vote for a sane immigration package because their voters are against it. How many hardliners on immigration are there in the House and how many people do they represent as opposed to how many who would vote for a clean DACA bill?
Itâs beginning to sound futile⌠EVEN if the Senate can pass something, it appears it will not be acceptable to the House, for sure, and to Trump maybe⌠although weasel that he is he will likely hang it on the house.
Except that the compromise bill you pass would likely not come up for a vote in the House, where Ryan still maintains the Hastert Rule: no bill comes to the floor without a majority of the Republican caucus behind it.
(Dems: Time to start naming it the Child Molester Rule.)
Agreed! Brilliant branding BTW.
Hereâs the thing .
We have a large anvil ready to drop if they donât
This time the shutdown will inflict some serious damage .
We all knew Mitch lied and that Paul Ryan has no interest in even attempting to govern like a responsible adult.
This is the price they will pay
Democrats and advocates for immigrants have failed to change the terms of debate. How many Trump supporters are on Medicare and Social Security, and are aware of the need to have more workersâincluding immigrant workersâto support those funds through their taxes? How many Trump voters know of real examples of immigrants employing people like them (as opposed to the guy who co-founded Google, which does not employ many people like them)?
Racism is a big part of the anti-immigrant movement, but there is one color that unifies people whatever the color of their skins: Green. Need to show those who fear immigrants that theyâll get more green with a more enlightened policy.
Aww, shucks.
But as the senators boast to reporters about their bipartisan bonhomie and progress toward a deal, a fear hangs over the negotiations [âŚ] âWeâre caught in this vortex where Trump wonât negotiate and Republicans wonât support anything that Trump wonât sign,â Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) told TPM.
âWeâre getting nowhere,â he concluded, âbut at least bipartisan bonhomie is off the charts!â
[All that aside: Thanks for the comprehensive report, Ms. Ollstein.]
Any provision in a negotiated ,bipartisan Senate immigration bill that Dems favor will make the bill DOA in the House. House GOPs torpedoed immigration reform in 2006 and 2013 and they will do it again. The House and Senate bills in 2006 did not even make it to conference committee. As I recall, there was no House bill in 2013.
Itâs almost certain Trump will reject any deal. Fighting the Ds on âimmigrationâ (ie xenophobia, white nationalism) is absolutely in his wheelhouse. Plus heâs temperamentally incapable of compromise.
Democrats have two very clear priorities: save Dreamers from deportation. Win 2018.
A loss on DACA irreparable and non-negotiable. If Ds donât save DACA, the party will be catastrophically split running up the midterms. Their only option is to cave on immigration after a shutdown and back themselves to right the ship in 2018/2020. The final option is theoretical: have a shutdown and win the PR war. Ds couldnât win a PR war against Adolf Hitler himself.
One footnote: should Ds win control of everything in 2020, D heads will roll if the number one priority is anything other than (1) rolling back every Trump policy with a vengeance; (2) the complete destruction of the GOP in redistricting. Gerrymandering should be absolutely pursued. Ds need 10 years to undo the damage and bring this country to its senses.
The Democratic failure to message correctly or with any self-belief has not only failed in respect of pro-immigration voters but in respect of the Dem voters. The lack of talent in our current Congressional crop is mind-boggling, especially since Frankenâs departure.
I have always thought the Senate could easily come up with a solid bipartisan bill, and that bill could be passed in the house if it came to a vote, but the Freedom Caucus and the Republican hardliners in the WhiteHouse need immigration to keep Americans from focusing on their real problems. Solving immigration is bad for the big agribusiness oligarchs and Fox News. It is bad for the Republican grievance message. Worst of all it shows that we can solve problems and the public might expect Republicans to actually do work for their voters as opposed to their funding oligarchs.
Not gonna happen. You presume too much good will on the part of the GOP and its âbase.â
The only way the Dreamers are saved is if the Democrats grow a pair and shut down the government. I am afraid they lack the balls to do that so the Dreamers should start packing.
The GOP gleaned that the last âshutdownâ hurt the Democrats - so theyâre more than happy to do it again (and who knows what damn polling is accurate). All I know is âDems shut government over brown illegalsâ is a winning message for them. When Schumer acquiesed, everyone said, oh, now it will be obvious itâs on McConnell and Ryan. Uh huh. Like most Trump voters even know who they are.
One solution which Trump and Republicans could not touch. Perhaps, Native Americans offer DACA sanctuary. They could work the casinos until such time as Dems get a brain, courage to fight back besides eating their own, and control of the legislature.
âThis is a relatively narrow, tailored issue. We have a population of about 700,000 in the DACA program that most of us, Republicans and Democrats alike, would like to give legal protections to."
You said it, Sen. Cotton. No reason to load it down with the wall, ending family migration, ending the lottery and all that other nativist crap. If everyone wants DACA, just pass it. Stop holding those kids hostage. Then, debate your jingoistic ideas on their merit.
