Discussion: Hillary Clinton's Favorability Dipped In New CNN Poll

Discussion for article #237032

what a shock! how could this be?

well, every gop presidential candidate says, 'hi, i’m running for president. let’s talk about how much hillary sucks." quite the consistent messaging. do they want to talk about fixing real problems that the US faces? NO! imo, this attack mentality will eventually be seen for what it is. they hide their own shortcomings by carpet-bombing her. the american electorate needs to wise-up. look for solutions not condemnations.

Not all of this is the media’s fault or even the GOP’s doing. A big part of her problem can be seen in her campaign emails, which consists almost exclusively of chances to meet Hillary or “new swag!” in the campaign online store. She isn’t saying anything about the issues of the day, and even though I generally support her, I find this boring and maybe even a little bit insulting. I don’t think she’ll have luck recreating the buzz that Obama got. Mainly because Obama generated that buzz by taking difficult stands on the issues of the day. The Iraq War, the Patriot Act, the financial meltdown, etc. If Hillary wants a bump in those numbers she has to come out and stand for things.

The right-wing Media Assault is WORKING!
That and the whiny MSM (specifically the D.C. MSM) that is angry she won’t do their job for them and CONFORM TO OUR PRE-CONCEIVED NOTIONS OF HILLARY so they can be lazy and still get paid.
Now, I’m no Hillary supporter, but this is just stupid this far out from the election.

And yet, she is still popular with us democrats. Also, she is still beating every republican candidate even though she has taken a pounding from the media. The republicans must be singing the blues, because Hillary takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Right you are. But it seems as though since about 2002 Hillary wants to be president because she wants to be president. If she wants to be president to accomplish something, beyond maybe “justice” and “peace” and such stuff, she hasn’t gotten the word out.

Of course, there are many such candidates, but she seems to be a particularly pure example. A candidate who’s not hung up on issues and policies.

Republicans won’t beat Hillary, the press will.

Yes, she is, but she’s doing it on the local level rather than the national level. She was just here in Columbia, S.C. on May 27 discussing women’s issues with Democratic women voters. Of course, TPM decided not to cover that event but Carly Fiorina’s dust up with the media outside the event.

Well not only did TPM forget to cover it, but so did her campaign. This was her email to me that day.

Friend –

Time is almost up – you have less than 24 hours to add your name and get the chance to be flown out to our surprise location and meet Hillary in person during our big campaign kickoff.

Let’s review:

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
You’ll have a blast spending time with our best supporters!
Meeting Hillary. In person. At a huge moment in this campaign.

And finally…

It’s going to be over really soon – less than 24 hours left – so don’t miss your chance!

So what do you say, will you join us?

So you expect her to run a general election campaign before she secures the nomination ? Taking the nomination for granted is what cost her it the last time.

How many seriously thought we’d get very far into this campaign without “Hillary plummets! Race neck and neck!” polls? The media has spent months whining that Hillary wasn’t reeling from their attacks. So now they have data to say, “Yes! People care about what we’re selling!”

But seriously – 55% disapprove over the “email scandal”? At this point in the campaign, do even 15% have any clear idea what the “scandal” even is? Other polls have found under 20% have been following it… yet everyone polled has a strong opinion? How many people even answer pollsters in the summer a year and a half before the election?

How many times in 2011 and 2012 did we get “Obama ratings at record low! Majority want someone new! Trails [fill in GOP flavor of the week]!” polls? Over the past few years, Clinton’s numbers have been way up and way down. Anyone actually believe that many people are really changing their minds all the time?

Clinton is doing local events for now. She doesn’t need to go to full campaign footing so far from the election. We’ll see what the polls look like in September of 2016. Then they’ll tell us something.

Lots of hand wringing going on in this comment thread. Not sure if you’re mostly GOP trolls. Btw, Clinton is not running her campaign for political junkies like you, she’s running for the large amounts of Liberal voters who pay very little to politics until it permeates their Facebook/Twitter universe.

Here’s the your other clue about this poll:

52 percent said they were Independents.

How many so-called ‘Independents’ are just Republicans ashamed to call themselves Republicans? I come into contact with a lot.

I’m not sure if this is a question for me, but I don’t want her to necessarily run a general campaign. In fact, I want her to run in way that excites her base. I just don’t think she’s doing well with that and while I can see that her strategy is to lay low and allow the GOPers to expose themselves, I think she’s allowing herself to be defined. She should pick at least one issue and make it her focus for a while.

The change in her “popularity” is almost totally a function of the different weighting given to different groups and the stampeding of Republicans into the “Independent” category. Ditto re the close margins of the theoretical races. Just tell me, folks, how many of you who voted for Obama are now planning on voting for any of the potential Republican nominees? OK, how many Obama supporters from 2012 do you think have been turned on to and are now supporting any one of the potential Republican nominees? Except for Rand Paul - who is not going to be the Republican candidate - none of them have even done anything to make them one iota more attractive to the electorate than Romney was. Until that happens, I don’t think there will be any change in the electorate-- except that Hillary will get a larger share of the moderate conservative suburban vote than Obama got.

your optimism is touching. it’s not like there are many democrats who are lukewarm about her, right?

  1. What is HRC’s position on TPP?
  2. What is HRC’s position on ACA?
  3. What is HRC’s position on fast-track?

What is HRC’s position on anything? She is running the Seinfeld campaign. Famously, it was the show about nothing. Her campaign is the campaign about nothing. The only thing she has taken a firm stand on is increasing mental health spending. How courageous.

My understanding of the purpose of the smaller and more intimate campaign events is to allow her to learn about the concerns of the base.

That’s really not so bad when you consider that they have been throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, at her for months and she hasn’t even really begun her own campaign yet. When the GOP field shakes out a bit and people get a better sense of what the realistic alternative to HRC is, her numbers have nowhere to go but up.

Well, I know that this is the explanation she’s given and I’m not convinced that this isn’t the smart strategy. But I have to admit that this saps my enthusiasm for her. I’ve gotten literally a couple hundred emails from her, and they all have to do with meeting her or buying swag. They all assume I’m on board already. I simply wish she’d stop playing it so safe. Maybe she’ll win this way, but what kind of mandate will she have? Think back to 2008. Obama campaigned on a lot of very concrete proposals and so when he passed those, he could fairly claim it was his mandate from the people. Hillary Clinton needs that as well.

Wouldn’t you have to think back to early summer 2007?
