Discussion: Hillary Clinton To Texas Teen: 'Stay Curious And Keep Building'

Yes. All of twitter is lazy so long as it limits people to abbreviated expression.

One sentence from the most powerful person in the world inviting him to the White pretty much says it all. Mrs. Clinton is running for president. She has to sell herself as the type of person who we want in the White House. I am sure she has it in her.

Also, “keep on being curious” is not the same thing as come to my house and show me what you are up to.

Yes, and apparently I’ve already got half my wish.

I don’t know of any presidential candidate, now or in the future, who’d tell someone on an open forum to come by their private residence. The WH is the people’s house, so it’s not nearly the same.

I have no doubt Hillary Clinton can speak extemporaneously and effectively about the many very important issues this raises. She has spent her life dealing with many of them. And it only takes a second for her and you and I to read this story and grasp how important it is to the future of our country. She doesn’t need advisers to draft a statement or send out a tweet. Just pull a few reporters to the side and start talking from your heart.

Hillary gets spontaneous! Keep it up, it’s the way to live.

I really don’t understand why you’re bothered. A brief Google search shows that Hillary has already spoken several times about police brutality, mass incarceration, and systemic racism. Given her public statements a tweet is a perfectly reasonable response.

I also think a response by a tech leader would be helpful. Had I a choice it would be the CEO of Texas Instruments.

Sorry, I don’t understand your point. I think a few words are missing from what your wrote. i am interested, so maybe you can edit.

Taking a guess… Everyone understand the importance of publicly being invited to the White House. It’s about as big a bitch slap to the High school principal as the president can afford without mailing the guy a knife to commit seppaku.

Clinton’s task is much harder. She doesn’t have to meet with the kid–she has no official power, anymore. but she does have to make the issue personal, in the sense that the public learns something about her from her reaction. It should be the mirror image of Trump telling everyone at every chance he gets that we have to deport all those lousy illegals cause that one guy in San Francisco killed that sweet young lady. IS this really so hard.

That’s the best thing she could say. There is no greater gift than curiosity.

I’m sure it has already improved. Maybe even rock star status with the other bright nerdy 14-year-olds. Street cred for sure (school hallways anyway).

Why is this same yardstick not applied to Bernie Sanders or literally anyone else? She tweeted in response to a story that just made it into the national media this morning. Give her time to get in front of a camera, to hold a public event, in which she can offer more fleshed out words of encouragement.

Might even put some rocket fuel in his love life—not too many other 14-year-olds in that county getting national media attention. Shame he’s not old enough to drive. : )

Oh for Pete’s sake. Maybe if she was his grandmother. But she is running for President.

How about: Ahmed do not be afraid. It is people just like you–coming from all over the world with their ingenuity and hard work who built this country. Don’t be afraid of small minded or hateful people. … I am not getting paid as a speech writer so I’ll get back to my day job.

The point is: this a big deal. The values and character of people who make this country great versus the reactionary angry people who would gladly destroy it. If that is not what this election is about then what?

Great things are expected from great people (and if you thought I was comparing her to anyone it is not her current opponents, save trump, it is to people who win the White House).

Also, if HRC has one problem with the electorate it is that she is perceived as too dispassionate that she is too much of an egghead, that she is all head and no heart. That she always always goes for the “fleshed out” version of things and never with the gut. So that is why it would have been an excellent opportunity for her.

Now that the President himself has taken all the oxygen out of the room, it is worth noticing how much more effective his communication was. Partly that is because of the trappings of his power (an invitation to the White House is much cooler than to Chappequa), but mostly because he was giving the kid an abundance of what was just taken from him-respect.

But like it or not, tweeting has a currency to reach vast numbers.

And it doesn’t depend on getting a media gatekeeper intrigued enough to cover it.

But sending out one tweet doesn’t mean there are no additional opportunities to weigh in.

Whoops, sorry, my inner cynic must have been turned to the Off position.

‘White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that “some of Ahmed’s teachers failed him” and said that it was the job of educators to nurture curiosity in students.’

You are not giving her the opportunity to make a personal statement. She did exactly what the WH did, which was to immediately send out a tweet and address it personally later. That’s what Obama’s doing. That’s what he did during both of his campaigns. I don’t expect or want HRC or any presidential candidate I might support to turn into some sort of ambulance chaser, hopping out in front of the cameras every time something happens. I like thoughtful people, not knee-jerk Donald Trumps who just says any-freakin’-thing that comes to mind. Taking a few hours or even a day to respond in person is fine. For fucks sake, nobody died.

ETA: In fact, when the economy was “cratering” in 2007, a crisis that was about to send the entire world in a deep recession, we watched how Team OFA handled the situation. They put out some calm statements, suspended the campaign and kept it moving. Team McCain, OTOH, ran around with it’s hair on fire responding to every news piece, jumping in front of the camera at every turn. That was one of the many things that wound up killing their campaign, the need to jump on top of every crisis and try to make hay of it.
