Discussion: Hillary Clinton Backs Measure Requiring Women To Register For Draft

Abolish it. I just don’t think it’s necessary at all any longer.

If a war rapidly developed, we would need the mechanisms in place to do something like a draft, so we do need to keep it.

I don’t know about this. I watched “Private Benjamin”, a very good documentary on women in uniform, and this policy gives me pause.

Having young men and women register for a draft just encourages war-mongering yahoos to dream up yet another disastrous military adventure. As the saying goes, If all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.

The advent of a “professional military class” that replaces a “citizen army” is one of the hallmarks of the downfall of any Republic.
This is usually followed by the hiring of foreign mercenaries to fill the gap of citizen volunteers to this “Professional Military” while maintaining a fully “native” Officer Class to control them.
We are now at that stage.

How did you feel about “Camp Beverly Hills”?

After 9/11 there were plenty of volunteers. I see no reason to continue the draft in any form.

I don’t disagree, I don’t think it’s this draft in this way. Putting aside gender issues, the draft is inherently economically unfair also. It needs to go.

Hell, how did he feel about “Stripes!”

Ok, so what do you replace it with?

I’m indifferent to them keeping the Selective Service in its current form, basically a list of people eligible to be drafted if we ever have a draft again. Given how unlikely it is that we would implement a new draft it seems like it is a bit of a waste of money, but so long as we have it it should apply equally to men and women.

A draft, with no exceptions for the offspring of politicians and 1%ers, might prevent some new wars.

I haven’t the slightest idea. I’m also not employed by the government or an elected official. I’ll let you know if I decide to write a white paper.

IF there must be a draft (and I’m not necessarily in favor of it), then women should be included.

But if a draft were actually to take place, there would need to be some mechanism by which at least one parent of a child, especially a small one, would receive a deferment. It would be tricky, since lots of people have children with more than one partner, and it could create an “I don’t want to be drafted” baby boom. That being said, there would need to be a way to keep mothers with their babies who are still nursing and try to minimize the risk of both parents being killed in combat.

I don’t know if it happens already, but anyone signing up for Selective Service should be registered to vote as part of it.

I’ve long believed that if you’re going to have a draft then it should apply to both men and women, it’s only fair.
