Discussion: Henry Heimlich, Creator Of Life-Saving Maneuver, Dies At 96

was choking the cause of the heart attack?

I can’t find whether it was or not. I’d assume not, given his age and that were it to be so, it would be incredibly noteworthy in this instance.

I’d like to know if Potsie will go to the funeral.

Wow. Apparently he was a complete fraud and quack, and the “Heimlich maneuver” is not demonstrably the best response to choking.
He had conducted clandestine experiments in which patients were given malaria to combat AIDS. I hope the NY Times will run an accurate obituary.
Their obituaries are legendary. I remember an instance in the 90’s where the ran a correction of an obituary in which they explained that an obituary which had appeared the previous day (presumably submitted by relatives or friends) was inaccurate, and in fact the man had been a scoundrel and grafter.

As someone whose life was saved by the Heimlich maneuver (I was choking on an Extra-Strength Tylenol after trying to swallow it while sitting in bed; my husband had the presence of mind to try the maneuver instantly, as soon as he realized that I couldn’t speak and was grabbing at my throat…one hug and the frickin’ pill went shooting out of my throat and across the room), I can only say: THANK YOU, DR. HEIMLICH!

I’d read about the bizarre, personally-motivated campaign that one of his sons had waged (anonymously) against him. I’m glad to read that his other son respected him and the work he did for humanity.
