Discussion for article #226180
“Both races divided the state’s dominant Democratic Party and offered voters a choice between the political establishment and a new generation of leaders.”
Abercrombie had a 40-year career – and Igee was a state legislator for 28 years! Doesn’t exactly sound like a battle between generations.
Abercrombie shouldn’t have crossed Inouye if he wanted to be reelected. I think it’s just that simple.
Losing Abercrombie isn’t that big a whoop. My problem is if Hanabusa sneaks in over Schatz. He’s a solid Democrat and she’s not, despite the Emily’s List endorsement.
This loss was forseen. He’ll be alright.
Abercrombie called his four years as governor “a singular honor,” and pledged in an email to help Ige “with every ounce of energy I possess.”
That’s an incredibly classy response.
Maybe, just maybe, Abercrombie wanted to do the right thing as opposed to getting re-elected. Because Hannbusa is wrong for Hawaii. She’s not just a DINO - she’s pretty damn Republican when it comes down to it.
Didn’t you learn anything yesterday with your banishment?
Concern troll is concerned. Adorbs.
The Puna district is hardly “remote”. It’s the fastest growing area of the State and the most affordable. I find it fascinating that the election of Senator will come down to two precincts in Puna, there’s some poetic justice in that since Oahu dominates Hawaii politics and basically looks down its nose at the rest of the State. Now one of our national politicians will be dependent on this part of the Big Island for getting elected. Maybe they will pay a little more attention to us now.
Abercrombie’s loss had zero to do with crossing Inouye, and everything to do with his being a jerk and alienating huge parts of both the electorate and Democratic interest groups, like the teachers’ union. The election has been purely about style - Ige offered essentially nothing of substance where he differed from Abercrombie, but he conveys a much more laid back, congenial manner. Throughout his term Abercrombie has picked a lot of unnecessary fights (or at least, fought them in a way that is combative rather than cooperative) that have done a lot of damage to his image.
Uh…no. I’m a Schatz supporter, because he is a hair more liberal on Social Security and doesn’t carry the grudge baggage Hanabusa puts out all the time, but in truth there is very little daylight between the two. Like Obama and Clinton, it’s more about style than substance.
It’s the go-to place if you want to dump a refrigerator, or a body. 30-40 minute police response time in many places, if you’re lucky. The place where a guy threatened to shoot a census worker, and the cops arrested the census worker. It’s close, yet remote at the same time.
Yeah, I used to live there.
Abercrombie would have lost in the General, so this is good news.
Возможно. All I know about it is what I read in the papers.
However, we all know that newspapers are not necessarily a reliable source of information.
Note that the Maui News article is from 2012, and the other one is from the NYT. Inouye wanting Hanabusa as his successor was an influence on the Senate race (Hanabusa has played it up relentlessly, which goes over well with older Japanese voters and gets irritating for others), but it wasn’t much of a factor in the governor’s race.
