Once the employee sent the false alert, he was directed to send a cancel message but instead “just sat there and didn’t respond.”
Ahhhhhhhh! The island life!
Once the employee sent the false alert, he was directed to send a cancel message but instead “just sat there and didn’t respond,” according to the state’s report on its internal investigation. Later, another employee took over the computer and sent the correction because the worker “seemed confused.”
There’s more to this, clearly. If people around him realized the emergency, and nobody stepped in to act…
Blaming this on one employee is only the easy excuse.
Sounds like the problems were numerous, and included both human error and systemic weaknesses.
So epic screwup results in firings. Looks like a teachable moment for the Trump Administration.
I’m betting the fired employee will be hired to monitor Donnie’s BIGLY button in the Oval Trailer…
What could possibly go wrong with that?
In other US Island merriment, I’m sure this news will be front and center in the Farce of the Uniom tonight
For the past however many years, until trump assumed office, the emergency-alert office was probably one of the safest places in the state government to stash this poor sap. (And who among us has not worked with the occasional person who just didn’t get it, no matter how many explanations they got, or who just freaked out when something needed to be done immediately.)
Yeah the fact that one employee alone can send the alert, the fact that the other employees that supposedly knew it was a drill waited so long to act for him, and that a test allows the alarm to be turned on.
I guess there wasn’t any room for him at the DMV.
The Guardian has some background
According to state officials, the watch officer had been a cause for concern to his colleagues for more than a decade and had twice before mistaken drills for real alerts. It was unclear how he had managed to remain in such a sensitive post for so long.
