Discussion for article #229484
Awwww for dogs sake Harry, give it a rest. There are plenty of good reasons to not vote GOTP but fear-mongering over impeachment is nowhere near the top of the list.
Sen. Portman basically sent out a dire warning to his fellow Republicans the other day. Although I do not agree with his policies in any way, I will say that he at least is not one of the typical lunatic right wing politicians. He is at least sensible.
He basically told them, that if they eek out a tiny majority in the Senate, and plan to continue to just go right on doing nothing but grandstanding, and doing stupid things like trying to repeal Obamacare, or shut down the government again, they will live to regret it badly in 2016, and impeachment would end up being a nightmare for them.
2016 is a Presidential year, and let’s face it, they have once again a very weak slate of candidates to go up against Hillary, but they also have many more vulnerable seats up in the Senate than the Dems do now, and if they keep the crap up for the next two years, their majority in the Senate will be short lived, they will hold no hope for the Presidency, and they may even lose seats in the House. I do not expect however, that the stupid party will heed those warnings though.
This is NOT fear-mongering.
The House would vote for impeachment in a heartbeat the same day the Republicans seat a Majority in the Senate.
They won’t possibly have the 2/3 majority needed for conviction but that is not the intent. They would get their “pound of flesh” and time the impeachment and trial to occur in Sept/Oct. 2016, just in time to influence the election.
Trust me, if the Republicans gain a Majority in the Senate it WILL HAPPEN (Yes, they really are that stupid to do it.)
Okay, for a moment, let’s humor Senator Reid and pretend that impeachment is a realistic outcome. So what happens? Biden becomes President, and he’s less of a corporate puppet than Obama. Republicans get the “scary black man” out of office, and he’s replaced by a white man who’s more liberal.
And I should be afraid, because… why?
This is the silver lining I see if the dems lose control of the senate. Perhaps a little short term pain for longer term gain.
Honestly, a strong 2016 for dems scares me a little since 2020 will be a census/redistricting year. We all saw what repubs did in 2010 with respect to redistricting after riding the tea party wave following the dem wave of 2008. At least 2020 is a presedential year to get dems in to vote, but still…
I have to agree. The House Republicans have, time and time again, shown themselves to be pretty unhinged. If the Republicans take the Senate, it’s really easy to see an impeachment vote in the House within days. They are that insane over in the House.
The Senate will have no choice but to run the trial. There are Republicans in the Senate who are just as unstable as their House counterparts, who will use a trial as an excuse to examine every little memo Obama has ever written. It will be a huge fishing expedition designed drag-on forever and kill Obama’s last two years in office.
Then, while all that is going on, the House will vote to kill the ACA…again. But, this time, they have a Republican Senate to send it to.
2015 is going to be insane.
And it would be an exercise in futile self flagellation for which they would pay dearly in 2016.
Not that many actually. Aside from Carnival Cruz, who is mostly despised by his Senate colleagues, the majority of GOTP Senators are far more pragmatic than the whackobirds in the house. Granted, they are a bunch of obstructionist dickweeds but with 24 of them up for re-election in 2016 I doubt that they are willing to face the ire of voters over wasting time and money on this fool’s errand.
Besides, do you really believe they could muster the two-thirds of Senators (sixty-six) needed to impeach a president?
I hear a lot of sabre-rattling but sometimes it sounds to me more like their knees are knocking.
But not enough votes there to override a presidential veto, so another futile exercise and waste of time.
Gotta admit, Sooner, futile efforts are not beneath them.
And to futile let’s add impotent.
No vote in the House unless Boehner brings a bill to the floor. Won’t happen. The Democrats should be so lucky to have the Republicans do something so crazy and self-destructive. What I do think may happen is that Obama will exercise his authority to the max under the immigration laws to “reform” and “humanize” the system. That will push the Republican Right Wing over the edge and they will demand impeachment. They won’t get it, but they will get House hearings that will so infuriate the Hispanic electorate that Hillary won’t need to learn Spanish.
Harry’s right. If Republicans take control of the Senate, they will spend the next two years impeaching President Obama.
Anything to get out of doing the job they were elected to do.
Fuck off with less than a corporate puppet bullshit. Take your fire bagger shit somewhere else. No wonder you are a Dateless Nerd
Biden is “less of a corporate puppet?” You do remember his role in driving the so-called “bankruptcy reform” nearly a decade ago, which made it harder for working Americans to declare bankruptcy and - just coincidentally, I am sure - protected the interests of all the credit card companies that are HQ’ed in Delaware … I mean, you do remember that, right?
Yeah, didn’t think so.
I understand why you’re dateless.
Not if all the registered voters who are not swayed by TeaLibertarian ideas actually get off their duffs, get over their hurt feelings, and vote for candidates who are Democrats, independents/3rd partys who will caucus with Democrats, or sensible Republicans in state races.
Stupid? Matter of opinion. Reckless? Always.
There’s always mid-decade redistricting, thanks to DeLay.
That was driven by the GOP which controlled both houses at that time while Dubya was in office willing to sign off on it.
You should be appalled, not afraid. There are no grounds for impeachment, and to subject this sincere hardworking President, and the country, to a subversion of justice on this scale, would change us fundamentally for the worse.
