Discussion: Harrison Ford Takes Aim At Trump And Others Who 'Deny Or Denigrate Science'

Trump well understands the low scientific literacy of Americans, put at just 3-4% of adults who can pick up a scientific paper and glean something from it, or read a general journal with some comprehension without getting stuck on terms like lipoprotein or brown dwarf. At the same time, 1 in 5 Americans think that the sun revolves around the earth, or something weirder if they are flat-earthers. In Finland (estimated scientific literacy 12-15%), you would be hard pressed to find a climate change denier or a person who argues that some or all of the change is coming from something other than human causes. In contrast, Kevin McCarthy, the Republican minority leader of the House just last year asserted that “Climate change is real, but I do not believe that the cause is manmade.” That’s an adult with an MBA and a discriminated Cherokee wife talking! It’s time for Kev to talk to the Han.

Good on Harrison. Using his fame for good instead of evil.

“Washed up Harrison Ford should stick to churning out more Star Trek movies that no one wants to see!”

Looking forward to maga and ditto heads dismissing this news with some Russia troll-farm created meme showing Harrison Ford rides on planes.

The reports of warming and acidic oceans and now the lose of major insect populations it is now beyond moral obligation but a question of survival of our civilization. If the ocean plankton ecosystem collapses we are f*&K since most of our usable oxygen is generated there and the insects are necessary for the proper functioning of the entire planet’s ecosystem. We, in the name of greed, are killing our planet and ourselves.

I am amazed how little science is taught America’s kids these days. Most people don’t understand science and are susceptible to the argument that scientists are liars trying to feather their own nests by promoting global climate change.

Edited so physics professors can understand what I meant to say.

This is not a proper sentence. Back to English class for you.

As far as the science, tell me why increasing amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere does not cause increased surface temperatures. By the way, I have taught physics, and it would be a doozy if you could twist this foundationally pertinent point toward your favor.

If you don’t know what you are talking about shut up, as it just adds to confusion and lack of positive action.

Plan for the Green New Deal proposed by Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; move toward a more benign energy plan for the United States to combat Climate Change with a renewable-energy approach that includes retraining fossil fuel workers, guarantee jobs to all who want to work, and promote health care to all.

GOP’s plan: Stall as long as possible, get as rich as possible, so that all their families and loved ones can have the best chance at surviving a world holocaust.

the poster obviously left the “a” off of the “re”. and while you may have taught physics, your reading and comprehension skills need work.

Obviously a lifetime spent writing legal documents has rendered me unable to communicate with really educated people like you. I happen to understand the basic science behind climate change and find it compelling. That means you don’t have to convince me. I am just talking about the many, many conservatives who think climate change is a secret plot by the world’s scientists to increase their power and funding.

Uh oh, you got Han Solo on your ass, Trump.

I find that so damn funny. How many scientists have you bumped into who want to rule the world? hahahaha

Me too, but I have been to lunch with conservatives who make that very argument. They mostly listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Fox News.

It’s the dumbest fucking thing ever. Scientists are the last people who want that kind of power as a rule.
