Discussion: Hard-Line U.S. Cardinal Gets Demoted By Pope Francis Again

Discussion for article #229967

Francis sees the problems that the Church faces in trying to appeal to people who were not raised in the generations when you died in your fifties.
Thank God this man heads Catholicism today. I only hope he lives long enough to undo the damage that ultra conservatives have done to the Church.
This move is long overdue.

The Pope has decided it is necessary to personally provide Cardinal Burke with his lessons in humility. Brilliant.

Shorter Burke: Whaddya mean I’m not allowed to hate outloud?

Very frustrating when the Pope insists on trying to follow Christ and not the well established bureaucracy politics.

I’ve never understood how some people cannot make the distinction between a law that permits something to happen and a law that requires it.

Surely pro-lifers are OK with a woman who chooses to carry to term, aren’t they? Or does it only count if Big Nanny State compels them to do it?

But the guy clearly had no problems with Catholic politicians who were routinely flouting the ninth commandment or seeing the putrid effects of routine debasement by bad Catholics like Sean Hannity.

They’re conflicted because he is, in the end, a papist.

Hopefully, Timmy Dolan and Billy Donahue will be next on the list.

While an unapologetic atheist, I like this Pope more and more.

Now if Pope Francis could undo the damage caused in St. Louis by this ultra-conservative…

I dont know where they got this Pope from, but man do they need to make about 10,000 more priests with his tone of mind.

I realize that TPM loves this Pope but really this change was known weeks ago. Burke has many supporters among the hierarchy and they are sure to outlive Francis. I noticed that this site did not play up the rejection of the Pope’s push for gay understanding and marital rethinking.
Old line Catholics provide the money that enables the Pope to bring hundreds of bishops to Rome to enjoy the city and reject his latest ideas. Outsiders may expect the Church to change just because a new Pope speaks out but really the Church relies on donations for its existence and in the end those people will decide it’s direction.
I wish that wasn’t the case but history paints a clear picture.

Tough job taken seriously, being Pope. How do you make your philosophy relevant in a world where truth is not suppressed, and where you no longer can enforce belief with the threat of torture and death? At least he’s getting the message to his misguided minions that the hard line won’t work anymore.

Donohue doesn’t, and never has, held any position in the Catholic Church. Despite what he may think, he has never spoken on behalf of the Church. Sadly there is nothing the Pope can do about him. If there was my guess is he would be at the top of the list.

Burke is a real asshole. Was this the guy who denied communion to Kerry?

Pope Francis is a breath of fresh air and chooses to follow Christ rather than the Catholic establishment.
