Discussion: Handel Projected To Win Georgia House Race, Dealing Blow To Democrats

I would like to keep fighting, but not for the kind of candidates the Democratic Party puts up. Ossoff was a decent choice, but

“In the only two governors races of 2017, Democrats might end up nominating a longtime Goldman Sachs executive and high-level political financier in New Jersey, while in Virginia the top of the ticket could feature a former George W. Bush voter who describes himself as a fiscal conservative.”

Really? Really?

The real question is what happened in SC-5? How was that race closer than in Georgia? Is there some explanation why a Trump district turned more blue. Was it just low turnout or is it more complicated.

In either case I don’t think it tells us much about 2018. Special elections aren’t great predictors of for the next election.

Let’s start by getting rid of the Diebold voting machines.

Funny how the Republicans can get their voters out, isn’t it? If they can do it, why can’t the Democrats?

Maybe the Democrats need to give their voters something to vote for more than just being anti-Republican or anti-Trump.

A blow to Democrats? C’mon. This was a hard-Right District. Winning would have taken a small miracle. Even with all the money she spent she only won by 4-5 points.

Republicans generally are still in major, blind denial. The multiple investigations are just getting warmed up but I suspect there will be a shift in 2018/2020 once the truth comes out. There will be Republican apathy but we will still need a massive turnout.

The theory being floated tonight is that politics are reverting to the mean, and that the '16 results were the outlier rather than a portent of the future.

I was a stooge and hack for the California Democratic Party, which you may be shocked to know is the progressive grassroots of the party. It is so easy to get into the inner circle of the establishment, all you have do is show up,and learn how to win elections. You might have heard how us party hacks have done over time.

One person i learned the most from was a Teamster who I assumed was some out of touchunion guy. I was wrong. In one afternoon I got a priceless political education.
Ossoff ran a grassroots campaign . he ran a respectable campaign it is foolish to second guess, and I really hope he is the candidate in 2018. He doesn’t seem to be the kind of guy who gives up or starts attacking people because of close loss.

Maybe instead of second guessing people, you could benefit to listening people who actually have experience experience winning.

This is Georgia, people. This House district includes more progressives than most in the state, but they’re still a distinct minority. Flipping it would have been a monumental accomplishment, and I’m glad so many Georgians were fired up. But the Rs figured out how to get their people motivated, too. It’s not the end of anything. Just a reminder that turning things around will take more work than it (seemingly) should.

I understand that progressives in the party are supposed to simply get in line and shut up, but which BernieBro came in Ossoff’s way?

I intend to keep fighting, but I would prefer to fight smarter. We need to think long and hard about why we are losing. How did we separate into tribes anyway? What does it take to break that separation? How do we move out of our safe enclaves and into Red America? How many of our “leaders” are happily gerrymandered in safe Dem districts? What is their incentive to move out into the red areas of their states?

Dear Viewers:

Tonight we saw a rerun of the 2016 election and a preview of the 2018 election. And probably the 2020 election.

There is no defeat that the Democrat Party can’t snatch from the jaws of victory. It is. LITERALLY watching a Keystone Cops gaggle of farting assclowns landing face-down in their own turd cream pie.

I’m done. I’ve been a registered, politically active Democrat since trying to keep Carter in office and reagan out. Registering as Independent this week and fuck it. My life is such a fucking disaster after pouring 37 straight years into it that it’s time for me to retire from politics and focus on what little retirement I might salvage from this clusterfuck.

JUST.

FUCK.

YOU.

There were millions who actually voted and left the choice for president blank.

If something doesn’t change, we’re truly doomed.

Yes, something will change, but unfortunately, the change is not going to be in our control. What will happen is:

  1. Republicans will gut healthcare for millions of people, especially poor, rural, and older folks.

  2. Republicans will deregulate Wall street, causing another 2008-like crash.

  3. Trump will drag us into an inevitably disastrous armed conflict in the Middle East.

Only after all this happens will people learn, once again, the consequence of Republican rule.

Until then, I am afraid, we have to get used to a few more Democratic losses.

lolz. If Dems keep this up all these moral victories might equal gaining one actual seat back in the house.

if its true that Dems didn’t turn out to vote because of a thunderstorm then F them. they get what they deserve.

Time to face facts. The Democratic Party is a mess from top to bottom except in a few states and money can’t fix this. And this is why Trump will get a few punches in as president and perhaps be re-elected. We got nothing.

And that is the problem! Instead of unashamedly advancing a proactive progressive agenda, the Democrats only strategy for winning is to hope for disaster and get votes because they are the only alternative to Trump.

The Republican party, top to bottom, is engaged in full-blown treason against America. I’m going to vote for those who call them on it, not those who treat it as acceptable political difference.

Thank you. My hot take? Rethugs are the lowest of the low. Handel never once tried to hide just how venal she is. Not once. There are more Rethugs in this area than Dems and they think she is the BEST THING to send to Congress.

Rethugs always revert to the mean. We can’t really expect decency, common sense or anything less than brutal stupidity from them. We just can’t. We shouldn’t try to communicate with them. It’s a Fools Errand. See all of them as they truly are.

We need to flip 20+ seats in 18 mos. We can do this.
