Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop-flavored biography about the first U.S. treasury secretary

Read that again, and see if you don’t also think that this just has to be from the Onion.

Some friends are flying to NY tomorrow just to see Hamilton.

God, I really hate them now

Yes. It sounded like a gimmick to me – until I heard the music. Now I’m playing the CD & waiting for a chance to see it live. What an amazing story!

As Hamilton got older, he got to be kind of a dick. I’ll bet anything that he had syphilis and it affected his judgment. That is really the only explanation for some of the things he did. Burr gets a bad rap from history, but he was not a bad guy, although he did some odd things later in life too.
Sure would be nice if there could be a touring company for Hamilton. Would like to see it sometime.

Burr gets a bad rap? While the treason charge weren’t proven, there are enough quotes from Burr to suggest that Hamilton’s words in the musical are accurate: “When all is said and all is don, Jefferson has beliefs – Burr has none.”

Hamilton was always kind of “dick”, in that he was a strong advocate for maintaining a moneyed class to hold the power. He was never on board with the idea of a “democracy” that could be ruled by the motley commoners.

In today’s terms, which is difficult to do, Hamilton would most definitely been on the side of the 1% and for more voter suppression laws. He would just be pushing that they be applied based on wealth.

Burr got a “bad rap” cause he was kind of a “dick”, too. The “odd” things he did later in life was trying to start an insurrection and claim a healthy chunk of the West for his own country, and attempting to provoke a war between Spain, Mexico, the United States and even England to further that goal.

As a pretty interesting side note to elections being “fixed”, the deal between Burr and Jefferson in 1800 is well worth the read. Basically, Jefferson needed NY, where Hamilton and Burr had been politically warring with each other for some time, so they cut a deal to split the Electors with each other, and then have the House choose Jefferson as President and Burr as VP. But Hamilton basically tried to ratfuck and deal, and even though he didn’t like Burr, he REALLY didn’t like Jefferson, so he started lobbying the House to make Burr the President instead. It ended up taking 36 votes in the House before Jefferson was declared President.

I am looking forward to seeing this, personally. Combines three of my favorite things…American history, politics and musicals

“The awards will be handed out June 12, with James Corden playing host from the Beacon Theatre in New York.”

WTH?!! Don’t they know Neil Patrick Harris is supposed to be host for life?!

Why do they have to try to make a musical out of everything anymore? Good gawd. First there was Kiss of the Spider Woman and now American Psycho and Hamilton.

saw it over Xmas. suffice it to say, I have seen a shit ton of musical theater…this was the best artistic moment i have ever experienced. it’s that good. transformative (yes, corny I know).

If you haven’t already, find the video of Miranda’s appearance at the WH several years ago, when he performed the first song of what was then just going to be the “Hamilton Mixtape.” When he introduces the piece, he gets a big (I’m sure expected) laugh; as his performance proceeds, the laughter turns from “ha, funny” to an incredulous delight at how good it is.
