But at least Haberman calls him out on it, immediately and clearly. Either he knew and is lying, or his staff is too incompetent to respond and/or inform the sitting president of the United States about such news coverage from what is (still) a pre-eminent guardian of the first amendment in this country.

I suspect that cynics may be misreading The Times on this one. Yesterday’s article (Mazzetti, Haberman, Fandos, and Schmidt) was pretty clearly a major effort to destroy Trump by laying out a convincing case that he has worked continuously and at all levels to obstruct justice. At the same time, its very existence indicates that many within the governmental apparatus are worried enough to spill significant beans.
We’re in a time pressure situation here, where the ruling group is rapidly converging on a strong defensive position, with control of the DOJ, national emergency powers (in anticipation, perhaps, of declaring the next ‘emergency’), and a relative easy military target (Venezuela) in the sights of Bolton, Pompeo, and, maybe, a renovated DOD sans Mattis (issue: loyalty) and intelligence apparatus sans Coats (issue: loyalty).
So it may well be that The Times in its Times-y way is forming up for the fight.
