I think there’s a lot of truth in this comment paraphrased from another site - it’s an overton window move. Once he backs off the tariffs and the markets somewhat recover closer to election he can take credit.

Well, then do something about it, asshole!! I hate to say it but I am hoping Trump craters the economy before the 2020 elections. We will all suffer from that but it will help get rid of him and his Republican enablers.
