Grassley has no choice. Not only is the Republican base now fully authoritarian and crazed, but they have to be fed a constant diet of misinformation and craziness. They cannot be fed policy achievements because there are none. This is the vicious cycle in which the GOP finds itself. Itâs an utterly broken party that must either destroy our democracy or face existential ruin. The latter is obviously out of the question for hacks like Grassley.
Democrats have started to bluntly state what is obvious to any dispassionate bystander: the GOP as such is unfit to operate in a democracy, at any level, and must be separated from every lever of power, period. This narrative must be amplified and repeated: Extremist. Gone to the dark side. Unfit for power.

I remember a bunch of people here giving him credit for being reasonable back when they were trying to push the ARA through Congress despite the fact that the very sight of the word âtrillionâ gave Republicans and the MSM alike the vapahs causinâ them to clutch theah pearls and reach for theah smellinâ salts. âTrillion?â The very idea was inconceivable at that moment of grave national crisis. It therefore became critically important to keep the cost of the bill below that magic number because reasons.
And then Grassley demanded that they up the cost of the bill without getting any actual stimulus out of it by folding a permanent AMT fix into the law as the price of his support. Which, having accomplished that bit of sabotage, he proceeded to withhold anyway.
And even after that, there were people willing to credit him with some shred of integrity.

OT, but the Dow just punched through the -700 floor it had been bouncing on for about an hour. And in the time it took me to type this it went from -761 to -901.

The market is down over 700 points. A couple weeks ago I was kicking the tires of VXX at $26.28. It hit forty bucks a while ago. Thatâs damn near 50% in two trading days. No, I didnât buy any. Damn it.
