Discussion: Grassley: Judiciary Committee Will Hold Debate On SCOTUS Nom Approach

Discussion for article #247128

Notice Grassley’s use of the word “debate”. That is precisely how the media will frame it so they can go full “false equivalency” on this, Constitution be damned.

Entrenched old rich white men. Nauseating.

If they aren’t going to do their job they should be fine if we don’t pay them and their staff.

Like it or not, Obama’s Supreme Court nominees will stalk the Senate chambers to reach out to the GOP Judiciary committee members. That is, until Trump loans them some of his security to body-slam them out of the Capitol :frowning:

It’ll take a couple generations, but one day the nation will be predominately black and brown and have an ever growing influx of immigrants becoming citizens. Commerce and innovation will require the latter of those three, regardless the sentiment of those fighting the trend as it happens. We’re seeing the dying throes of the goddamned imperialistic, racist, war-mongering, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic Caucasian nativists. Good riddance.

As an aside, unfortunately many of the black, brown and immigrant people I reference will be (and currently are) every bit as homophobic and misogynistic as their white predecessors. Some despicable human traits know no ethnic, religious or racial bounds.

Chuck’s gonna nail himself to this cross, and then we’re gonna light it afire.

It’s a pity Pat Leahy never ran for higher office. The guy has definite mainstream appeal. While liberal, he is not far left, and comes across totally professional at all times. I love Bernie, but at times he rants and shouts a bit much, which I think turns off some voters. Leahy is much more tempered, yet still personable enough to attract voters. He also has sponsored the most bi-partisan bills of any Senator (61%).

No, he will likely use one or more of the Senate’s arcane rules to a.) skip the meeting b.) gavel down any attempt at debate c.) gavel the meeting closed as soon as he hears opposition d.) set up a sub-committee on the spot to avoid any open discussion, said committee to meet in closed hearings starting June 1 (or later) all of the above to provide him with “cover” to the press and the public.

He’s a fool though, and an old one at that, if he thinks he can duck this issue for the next nine months. The Iowa press is already going nuts over this and once those attack ads appear, Grassley is toast and he knows it.

Amazingly, he’s IMO been put up to this by McTurtle and other senior Republicans yet he’s the one who will very likely lose his seat in November. Wonder if McTurtle pledged to give up his Senate seat if Grassley loses?

“I’ve never been invited to a Democrat Caucus”

Once again, you have to warn me when you are going to do this, I could have had coffee in my mouth.

There is still time for the Dems to invite grASSley to their Cinco de Mayo party and then, when he shows up, announce that he’ll be serving as the festivities’ piñata. And then WHACK him.

Grassley died about 15 years ago, but no one told him.

I have always admired and respected Senator Leahy as well. Intelligent. Highly professional. Honorable. A real pro. Maybe he can top off his career with a cabinet position. Hopefully.

Tomorrow, I think we’re going to have debate.

The really fun debate will be back home in Iowa, when you try to explain why they should re-elect you for not doing your job.

I would like to politely point out that the term “Caucasian” comes from an ideology which assumes white people will be further broken down into different kinds of white people. It is still a very commonly used term among our most otherwise picky identitarians (which I am not suggesting that anyone here is), which perhaps suggests that our discourse is afraid of addressing the small complexities of whiteness. I really think we need to just get rid of that one.
But yeah, I watched the documentary on Anita Hill the other day, and wow! That 1991 Judiciary Committee! They sure looked stupid those old entrenched white idiots (Biden included, unfortunately).

wait

that was part of an ECW card…

They are going to give him one hell of a talking to. That will show him who is boss. I can see him quaking in his boots, literally shaking.

Oh crap, wait. He’s laughing. He thinks he has won just because he thinks that we are going to sit here and lecture him, but do nothing. He actually thinks that we are going to sit here and talk, talk, talk and then let him get away with this. That were are all talk and no action.

Well I have news him and his buddies. We are going to do something, not just talk. In fact, we are going to scream and yell. And wave our arms a little bit.

There. That showed him. See you in February 2017.

Unexpectedly, I found myself all flustered at the prospect of hearing the senites of an assign so august (even may) as the Judiciary Committee of the senior chamber of the Congress of these U.S’s of A. discussing even the mere theoretical possibility of perhaps one day considering whether or not to conduct some sort of internal count, estimation or consensus on the issue of the whether or the whether not it, as a committee per se, might do something, at least hypothetically. Oh, my: I’m overheating with conditional anticipatory excitement over the pro forma prospect of listening as committee chair Senator Grassley martials his forensic troops into the fray!
