Does that average include the length of time Merrick Garland was nominated, which was sometime in March 2016, through January 20, 2017? Just curious, for some reason.
Fixed the quote for Grassley. It’s pretty obvious that the Garland time isn’t in there or the others would have had to have been much shorter to keep the average where Grassley cites it, were the long Garland nomination included. Averages are funny that way. One many sigma data point really skews them.
Gorsuch: 65 days.
Garland: 310 days.
Kagan: 87 days.
Sotomayor: 66 days.
Average: 132 days.
132 - 87 = 45, which would put us at November 18, 2018.

At a Republican press conference a short while ago, Senator Grassley said that the average number of days to consider a Supreme Court nominee has recently been about 87 days and the Kavanaugh nomination has exceeded that. Thus Grassley said that he doesn’t want to hear that the Senate didn’t spend enough time considering the Kavanaugh nomination. Judge Merrick Garland was nominated March 16, 2016. President Obama’s term ended January 20, 2017. Thus Judge Garland’s nomination was out there for 310 days. Clearly this number (310) didn’t figure in Senator Grassley’s math. Since Senator McConnell refused to even “consider” Judge Garland’s nomination, and the Senate as a body devoted no time to that nomination, Grassley’s calculation appears to apply on to when the Senate considers a nomination.

Correction: 87 days is the time elapsed since Kavanaugh was nominated. Average # of days to consider recent nominees has been much less according to Grassley. Garland? Apparently these guys never heard of him. If McConnell ever told us about Garland I’m sure we all would have contacted uber to go out and interview Judge Garland.
