Sotomayor’s point was that a diversity of personal backgrounds on the Supreme Court will make for more imaginative and humane decisions. In fact, she said this: “I […] believe that we should not be so myopic as to believe that others of different experiences or backgrounds are incapable of understanding the values and needs of people from a different group.”
On the other hand, what Trump is saying is that no judge who is of a different ethnic background or who disagrees with him politically can be unbiased toward him.
Sotomayor’s emphasis is on justice. Trump’s emphasis is on himself.
So yes, they are saying completely different things.

Yep. In other words, Sotomayor who was speaking about the life someone lived in part as a result of their heritage, and Trump, who was making a claim about attitudes ingrained because of who someone’s parents are, are saying almost diametrically opposite things.
But Grassley is of the New Republican Party that laughs at our silly reality-based thinking.
