Discussion for article #237732

What do you know. I guess she heard from those CEOs.

Probably, but at the same time, she may’ve lost the votes of many in her State as well as support from many of the organizations that previously funded her campaign for governor.

She may be able to force the assembly back into session, but she won’t be able to force her will or anyone else’s on the assemblycritters. They will vote as their constituencies and supporters demand. Besides, by the time the assembly could reconvene, the media will have our focus on some other shiny object.

Still unable to deal with the reality. The goddamn thing means the same thing to everyone, love it or hate it. It’s just that some of the ones who love it are lying to themselves and the rest are lying to everyone but themselves.

Haley said she would use her authority as governor to force the General Assembly back into session if they did not have a debate over the removal of the flag.

I missed her speech. Did she give any time frame?

Rats are always the first to abandon a ship that is sinking…

To be fair, rats are smart and are the first to realize that the ship is actually sinking…

Good that she at least made this symbolic gesture. Something I pointed out would be at least the bare min. the other day. It doesn’t approach anything resembling the hard and heavy-lifting to address racial discrimination, inequality and gun violence in our society, but I will at least acknowledge she did the bare min. on a symbolic level.

But like NCsteve noted upthread, she still is in la la land.

Haley said Roof had a “sick and twisted view of the flag”

No, it was an accurate view of that flag. Which stood for armed violence to protect the institution of slavery. It belong sin a history museum along with the Nazi flags and the KKK hood.

Yeah there are lots of South Carolinians who view the Stars and Bars as a “symbol of
respect, integrity and duty.” Especially those ones at cross burnings.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley ® said on Monday that the Confederate flag must come down from the grounds of the state capitol.

…

Haley said she would use her authority as governor to force the General Assembly back into session if they did not have a debate over the removal of the flag.

There is no need for debate, but there is a need to remove the flag.

Haley: “My hope is that by removing a symbol that divides us, we can move forward as a state in harmony I can somehow bolt this political train wreck before it craters my national ambitions even further."

Fixed.

No. People who support the flag see it as a symbol of respect, integrity and duty unless they’re the people who support the flag and see it in a sick and twisted way. It should be removed from the grounds of the Capitol because people love it but in the wrong way. Perfectly clear. What’s the problem?

And I do believe that is what she’s counting on. Now she can say she tried to do what’s right, and leave it to the general assembly.

If the Confederate flag is a symbol of “integrity”, Gov. Haley, than you should speak honestly about it. Roof is not the first to have murdered, lynched, bombed churches, or beaten and burned crosses in its name… and millions of South Carolinians view it as a symbol of hate and intimidation not the symbol of a lala land that does not exist, but the one that really does.

Unless she actively pushes this issue, really attempts to bring people together and helps to gain support from the state legislature, all she’s really attempting to do here is blow smoke up people’s asses and hopes the momentum for this issue will pass soon.

That was quick.

Edit to add: It only took 150 years.

She just ended her chance to be the Republican vice-presidential candidate.

You’re only citing the people that support it in a sick and twisted way not those that see it as a symbol of respect, integrity and duty.

Other Countries: What did you do after that shooting of nine people in a church?
America: We took down a flag.
Other Countries: What about guns?
America: Uh. What?

Our country can’t even be parodied at this point.
