A curfew. A ready-made reason for conflict with a deadline. Fabulous. That’ll help.
Well, something has to be done to protect private property and possibly lives. How does looting ever serve a better good?
Is the curfew in force for ALL of Ferguson or just certain neighborhoods?
'“The looting will continue until moral improves.”
I watched this and could not believe how badly the governor was handling things.
First and foremost ‘every’ time any official holds a press conference they should be giving some sort of update or state of the condition of the investigation/progress to justice.
This is the spark of the outrage and keeps festering and getting more inflamed by the actions of the officials and this stupid idea of a curfew is no exception.
The history of ‘sundown’ towns, I have heard of all week. They are restricting the civil rights of people outraged over the murdering of an unarmed young man. How do you then decide to restrict everyone’s civil rights as a way to create peace?
What I also find interesting after watching the meeting live… is that the media cleans it up and makes the governor look better than he really was at the meeting. I have to say as a peaceful person I would feel a very strong desire to be out during ‘curfew’… the idea is infuriating and I am certain they could find a better way of dealing with the law breakers.
It makes me wonder though if the reason they are doing this is because they are going to get the public more inflamed as they release the incident reports and other facts…
It certainly appears to be a war of bullshit will… we will keep stomping on the residents until they submit…
How’d that work out for hitler? Or any other fucking power junkie…
Wednesday I watched the riot . . .
Seen the cops out on the street
Watched ‘em throwin’ rocks and stuff
And chokin’ in the heat
Listened to reports
About the whisky passin’ ‘round
Seen the smoke and fire
And the market burnin’ down
Watched while everybody
On his street would take a turn
To stomp and smash and bash and crash
And slash and bust and burn
And I’m watchin’ and I’m waitin’
Hopin’ for the best
Even think I’ll go to prayin’
Every time I hear ‘em sayin’
That there’s no way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
You have to be joking. During the Bundy debacle, WHITE OUTLAWS had snipers out clearly interested in killing law enforcement and citizens. What kind of curfew or any law was set to limit them? White cop kills black kid, law enforcement maligns kid, law enforcement sends some crap out that looks like the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza, people are justifiably pissed, and look at the limits white people place on them.
I fail to see anything that the Bundy and Fergusen have in common. I mean, how do you impose a curfew on a ranch, out in the sticks, inhabited by lawless dickheads? How would you even enforce that?
Curfews typically go in place for a community that has a police presence.
What about people who work night shifts? The hospitals in North County may be short-staffed tonight.
My point was the disparity in the response. Law enforcement allowed the Bundy people to be totally lawless, blocking access to public roads, pointing weapons at law enforcement, pouring flammable liquid around news vans, bomb threats, the list goes on. Law enforcement’s response was quite different than what is happing in Ferguson.
There are reasons for the disparity due to location being city vs ranch, federal marshals vs local cops and the situation, tax cheat with heavily armed militia itching for a fight vs unarmed kid.
Sorry, I just don’t see any justification at all for your making this something as simple as white vs black.
There are plenty of good arguments to be made against police profiling of young black males resulting in the black kid essentially being murdered because he’s black but the Bundy bullshit is not one of them.
This is blatantly illegal.
This curfew is being imposed for the express purpose of preventing the people from exercising a, no, several constitutionally protected rights. Free speech, assembly, and right to petition the government are all protected by the First Amendment.
The people are assembling to demand that the government address a specific grievance. The fact that such assembly may embarrass the government is exactly why the rights are protected.
The governor no doubt knows this. He was probably advised not to announce this until Saturday night when all the talking heads are not point out that this is clearly illegal and the rest of the country is not paying attention.
It’s a calculated risk. The governor is hoping to break the momentum of the protestors and to return the town to business as usual, without actually doing anything. If the tramples on the peoples civil rights, then he is hoping that he can lift the curfew before Monday morning and nobody will notice.
If I were there, I know that I would protest against the curfew.
A curfew might have worked after the first night, but it’s been seven days since then and too much tear gas and manipulation of the system for that now.
Why couldn’t they have just stuck with what was working on Thursday night? Someone let that moron Ferguson police chief throw flames on a dying fire. Then, after a whole week without a curfew, they impose one?
Wouldn’t it have been better if State Trooper Commander Johnson had gone back on the streets tonight to talk down the tension? That actually worked.
The plan was to not release anything until the investigation was over. Yet here’s the Ferguson police chief releasing contradictory information almost hourly, as well as presenting a tape that would never be allowed as evidence in the shooting trial.
It’s like he wants to inflame the community. so they can roll out the tanks again and play Iraqi war games. Who is going to bring this guy down?
If someone doesn’t step up and law down the law to that deplorable, unprofessional old fart of a Ferguson police chief, I’m going over there and start registering all those people on the streets to vote. The only way apparently to get rid of this bigoted rotten apple is to replace all the people on the Ferguson City Council who hired him.
Let’s give these people a mission. Then maybe they will calm down and let the justice system work its way through the court system to its natural conclusion?
The police chief needs to resign. He hired someone who murdered (under color of law) a teen-ager who had his hands up. The chief can’t keep order in his own town and every time he opens his mouth he makes things worse. If he won’t quit, where are the communities representatives who can fire him. I think more than anything the end of the chief’s reign would serve to calm things down.
