Discussion: Gorsuch's WH-Appointed Sherpa Confirms Remarks As Prez Sows Doubt

Call me cynical, but Gorsuchā€™s well-timed complaints about the Donaldā€™s anti-judge ranting seems to be part of a strategy to strip off enough Democratic votes to avoid being filibustered.

ā€œDonald Trump, who built his entire campaign for President on a fabricated claim that President Obama was born in Kenya (and who lacks the mental capacity to perceive objective reality) ā€¦ā€

Shouldnā€™t every news story about him begin something like that?

"The President communicates differently than I do or than a lot of other people do.

Thatā€™s an understatement for the history books.

Itā€™s likely going to be used that way.

I think Gorsuch does feel that way, in relation to those Twitter attacks. However it would be smart as hell to use those comments as a form of bipartisanshipā€¦

Trumpā€™s comments may be a way Trump has of ā€œnegotiatingā€ for Democratic votes for Gorsuch. Lies can make something very distasteful look more acceptable and thus can be a way of negotiating a deal and, in case nobody has noticed, Trump is very good at lying. Just because it looks like Gorsuch is bucking Trump doesnā€™t mean that Gorsuch is more moderate than people think. Remember the group that worked with Trump on picking Gorsuch. Be suspicious, very suspicious.

Most of us speak orally, the creature trump speaks anally.

If he is an actual ethical person, Gorsuch should criticize the Donald under oath during his confirmation hearings. Will he do it?

I think some Democrats see Gorsuch as an even swap for Scalia, a bookish conservative for a bookish conservative, even if his views are regressive. It could be worse. It could have been David ā€œKill the gaysā€ Price. Maybe heā€™ll be run up the flagpole again if Trump or Pence get to nominate another Justice. The bigger fights will be over replacing any of the liberals.

I was thinking the same, that Gorsuch is trying to distance himself from Trump, possibly to garner favor from Dems.
Additionally, during Gorsuchā€™s SCOTUS introduction by Trump, Gorsuch fully extended his arm to shake Trumpā€™s hand, while Trump short-armed him and tried to jerk the nominee into his space 3 times. Gorsuch fully resisted the lame Trump power/bully handshake and remained a full armā€™s length away.
Is it a play by Gorsuch or does he really not like Trump?

ā€œThe President has every right in the world to disagree with an opinion that eventually will be decided.ā€

ā€œBut nobody else does.ā€

Kelly Ayotte was formally walking him around the offices, can someone please ask her what she thinks about her favorite president, this nominee and the comments she heard him make about so-called judges.

[/quote]This is the whole point, how can he not? If the senate caves and never asks, thatā€™s one thing. But Dems are now going to ask about this.

If Trump allows his nominee to disparage his remarks then this all goes away. But the scenario that may be unfolding is a significant trap that Trump has landed himself in. Gorsuch can be replaced, but the new nominee will have to walk the same plank.

The only solution is that Trump has to accept the public criticism from his nominee and shut-up. I donā€™t think heā€™s capable of it.

ā€¦didnā€™t ā€˜disheartenā€™ Gorsuch enough for him to politely decline the nomination.

It would take a lot more than this for most people nominated to the peak of their profession.

If Gorsuch has integrity, he will repeat the statement under oath. But now that he underst ands what the person who nominated him expects of him, it would be sensible to withdraw from consideration.

Iā€™m not agreeing or disagreeing with Gorsuch or his nomination or anything else, but - once someone is confirmed in that position he is not answerable to anyone, including the person who put him there by nominating him.

So likely Trump has expectations but once someone is on that court, nobody can tell him what to do.
