The picture and headline just busted me out laughing!
Peace Prizer cracks wiser.
“Is it really that hard to understand that rejecting these agreements is, as the people say, not the work of a great mind.”
“Do they really not understand in Washington what this can lead to?” he asked.
I was an exhibit guide in the Soviet Union, working for USIA, during the zenith of the Gorbachev era, which included the talks leading to the signature of this treaty. It really seemed to herald a new era, a significant lessening of east-west tension, maybe the beginnings of a better world. The Soviet Communist world was mostly ecstatic…the Soviet people saw a possibility for a better life, and the satellite countries an end to Soviet domination coming from sharp cuts in Moscow’s defense budget. It has been so dispiriting, watching the death of that hopeful time, and its replacement with a new generation of perspective-free authoritarians and warmongers.
So understated it cracks me up!! Go Gorby!! P.S. He looks like Ed Asner…
Trump backers will dismiss this as the words of a “failed dictator.”
I just posted a comment about the world knowing that Trump is a WEAK potus! This withdrawal from the Nuke Treaty is a decision that seems to be made by a person with a very low IQ! Furthermore, how is this decision making Americans SAFE?
Trump’s mind is below an amoeba.
His only thoughts have to do with any woman, who no self respect, who will have sex with him and make him remember Vietnam.
The other signatory to that agreement was Ronald Reagan. As corrupt (Iran contra), greedy (corporate tax cuts while slashing the safety net), and venal as that Republican Party was, I’d take that Party over the one that exists now in a heartbeat.
And I agree that Gorbachev should also talk to Putin, another not so great mind, if we’re talking peace and the survival of humans.
Trump made fun of the birthmark yet?
Mr. Gorbachev, Trump does not work and you are correct, his mind is not great.
We do however live in fear.
Thanks for speaking up.
Our Constitution is a suicide pact. The President selected by the Electoral College is a madman and nothing we can do.
Impeachment? Nope.
25th Amendment? Nope.
Nothing we can do.
No democracy, no justice.
How is it possible that a treaty which required ratification by 2/3 of the Senate can be annulled by a president? Is this true of all our treaties—that any president can alone decide to end it without any further review?
At the moment, the president can do anything he likes: withdraw from treaties, make laws, order tax cuts, ignore the emoluments clause, direct foreign policy to serve his businesses, direct domestic policy to serve his business…
There’s nobody to stop him. Nobody. Nothing.
Exactly. This shows Gorby, in his late 80’s, has still got more sense than Trump has ever had. You can bet Putin was consulted before this was sent out. The understated insult is perfect.
Stimulus/response only.
I think today’s situation is what the GOP was working towards all along. Their goals were dumbing down education, strengthening hatred between Americans on many different lines (racism being their foundation), eroding the power & wealth of the middle class, and making the poor even poorer, and giving 99.9% of wealth and power to the .01% of Uber-rich.
They probably didn’t foresee the Russians being involved in the disintegration of the US government and social structure, but I doubt they would have minded, just as they don’t care now.
Hear that, Bolton?
I always wondered: If a woman actually spent the entire night in the same bed with Two-minute Toadglans, did he wake up and yell “Good Morning, Vietnam!” at his unfortunate paramour? It’d kind of fit with his painfully obvious method of delivering tender coos.
