Discussion: GOPers Threaten TV Stations With Lawsuits For Ads Tying Them To Trump

Lots of luck, suckers. Pottery Barn rules apply.

They are from his party. They would vote for many of the things he wants. Not defamation, just the truth.

“Donald Trump has made the terrain so difficult for some GOP congressmen
in moderate districts that a handful have threatened to sue TV stations
for running ads produced by Democrats tying the Republicans to their
nominee.”

Threatening frivolous lawsuits - just where may they have learned that neat little trick?

It really is hard to see how any Republican politicians could remotely make a case that they’d been defamed by being linked to their own party’s Presidential candidate.

The discovery phase alone could be hilarious.

Mike Coffman is the guy who in 2012 said, at a meeting in conservative Elbert County, CO, which he then represented in Congress, “I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America; I don’t know that. But I do know this, that in his heart he’s not an American, he’s just not an American.” Now what current Presidential nominee does that sound like? Of course now that Coffman’s district has become less Republican, he’s been trying to erase all memory of the gut feeling he soon enough realized it had been inconvenient to express.

I’d like to see them try & say they wouldn’t block gun reform, restrict access to abortion, fight a minimum wage increase, try to dismantle ACA… or any number of things DT has campaigned on. They may think he’s a distasteful loser but DT is plenty GOP.

You know, on second thought, I’m not sure any of these cases would even make it to the discovery phase.

I imagine any lawyer representing one of the sued media outlets would immediately file for summary judgement – pointing out the high level of protection granted to political speech, and the utter farce of a politician suing for defamation/slander/libel over being linked to the de facto leader of his/her own party.

…this HAS to be unprecedented?

Thank you so much for bringing up how uncomfortable your party’s nominee for president makes you. Perhaps the next journalists you encounter in your election campaign could explore your feelings in more detail?

I’m pretty busy phone banking and stocking up on popcorn for election night, but I’m pretty sure there’s someone around who’d be happy to throw you that anchor.

Let them sue. It’s good for the economy.

That is pretty hilarious.

“I AM NOTHING LIKE DONALD TRUMP AND I WILL SUE YOU IF YOU CONTINUE TO SAY I AM LIKE DONALD TRUMP! NOW GET YOUR PUSSY OVER HERE!”

Once again the Trustees of Brain Trust Central have inadvertently performed a valuable public service by publicizing attack ads most people probably weren’t even aware of. Moreover, now their whining will be further publicized — and the ads shown for free — on every local newscast in Illinois, Colorado, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania, not to mention whatever brief coverage on national outlets.

Well played, guys.

Mike Coffman and any politician who ever spouted something of this nature need to be buried … metaphorically speaking, of course.

Pop quiz: when is political speech not considered free speech?

(Extra credit: does this mean we’re ready to revisit Citizen’s United?)

Two words: swift boaters

Ok. Two more words: Willie Horton

Courts generally have a long leash when it comes to political advertising…so good luck.

You know, for people who don’t want to be associated with Trump, it’s funny they’re using his favorite tactic: the frivolous lawsuit.

If I were the TV stations’ attorneys I would troll the f*** out of the plaintiffs by responding along the following terms:

“Thank you for your letter of October 24th, in which you allege that our client has broadcast commercials that defame and falsely depict your client as a Trumpist. We respectfully suggest that your client’s threat to sue our client for defamation on these grounds verifies the alleged depiction.”

I see, so it is OK when Republican PACs do it to Democrats, but when it happens to you all of a sudden it is an outrage. Republican hypocrisy once again on full display.
