Discussion: GOPer's Bill Responds To Complaints That Students Learning About Islam

Discussion for article #241696

I admit to giggling when I saw her name, and then was a bit ashamed at the level to which I had stooped, until I thought about her comments … I then realized I was still pretty much on an Einstein level in comparison. Let the butt jokes role!

“Americans have seen the radical side of Christianity, and many have grown skeptical of this ‘peaceful religion’. As a result, it comes as no surprise that American parents & citizens are upset to learn that American students are being forced to spend upwards of three weeks learning about Christianity in their local public schools,”

Funny thing, I almost agree with her, but only if they also quit shoving that two part fairy tale starring that JC character down kids’ throats as well. Unfortunately, I suspect that she will exempt christianity because in her pea-sized brain, it is the only true religion, rather one of many competing fictions.

 these fools worship the same god and Muslims believe Jesus was Christ too. I get that the Torah, Gospels and Quran is a lot of reading and hard to comprehend, but these people are a fuckin’ bunch of nincompoops.

I would take this more seriously if she were a man. How’s that for “indoctrination”?

I hear that she’s the Butt of many a snicker and joke.

It’s nutty, but on the other hand, I’m not for the teaching of ANY religion in public schools. Period.

The load of hypocrisy and sheer lack of self-awareness here is staggering.

“I think that probably the teaching that is going on right now in seventh, eighth grade is not age appropriate,” she said. “They are not able to discern a lot of times whether its indoctrination or whether they’re learning about what a religion teaches.”

But babies raised into a religion isn’t indoctrination against their will? The venn diagram of the “crazy crackpot people” and “people who ‘found religion’ as adults” looks suspiciously like a circle because no educated and free-thinking adult would come into religion cold and think, this seems right.

Not teaching anything about religion is foolhardy. It’s a tremendous part of world culture, history, politics, literature, and almost every other facet of life. It’s critically important to have at least a basic understanding of every religion, whether you believe strongly in one faith or are completely non-religious.

“Following complaints from parents and lawmakers that Tennessee students were learning too much…”

…‘cause we here in Tennessee have a long tradition from Scopes to now this of not learnin’ as much as possible.

You know it would be helpful if you included some information on what is being taught instead of just repeating what she claims is being taught. Maybe some comments from the educators involved to provide some context. If they were just straight up teaching Islamic doctrine in public schools that would be troubling, just like if they were doing the same with Christianity. From what I could put together from the attached articles it sounds like the material on Islam is part of a section on the history of the Middle East and it makes sense that they would provide information on Islam for context just like you would need some understanding of Christianity when teaching European history. Still it would have been nice for some of that information to be laid out in this article.

You won’t see that because I guarantee you there is nothing objectionable actually being taught. Well, nothing reasonably objectionable. I’ve got family in Tennessee, and after seeing their Facebook posts I can tell you the only thing they would find unobjectionable would be if you teaching kids Muslims are evil heretics that all want to carbomb you and need to die in a nuclear explosion.

Mind you I’m not saying everybody in Tennessee is that xenophobic and ignorant… just the kinds of people that lose their @#$% over things like this.

Too bad we couldn’t get a bill that shields people from religious indoctrination from ALL religions. Children in this country are almost always indoctrinated into one religion or another. It’s child abuse.

Oh for the love of God, why must these people be so backward and stupid! I went to Catholic school all my life. A jesuit school to boot. I clearly remember in the Social Studies courses to have studied the great religions. I learned about the Budha, and the pillars of Islam, and Shinto, Hinduism, and yes Christianity. We learned about the crusades, and the reform and counter reform. And the purpose was to broaden our horizons, to learn how other people lived and what was meaningful in their life. I am happy for that, since what I learned in that regard make me a better individual and helped me why dealing with people different from me. And folks that is 98% of the world. These people are anti intellectuals, know nothing morons that hide constantly behind the Bible and the Constitution in order to justify their stupidity. If that bill passes I hope the governor vetoes it.
