It’s not the shutdown, as bad as those are, it’s the debt limit. 2008 was catastrophic for my finances. I can’t have it again. And the general population doesn’t understand what these lunatics are willing to risk. I’ve read enough history to know there are times when powerful societies develop brain rot and sail themselves right over the waterfall despite every warning the sensible folk can raise. This looks exactly like that, and we’ve been pushing our luck repeatedly for years already.

The GOP doesn’t benefit from shutdowns (ask Newt), but since there are some seriously gerrymandered districts, they don’t stand to lose a lot either. Curiously, there’s a number of people that will see a shutdown as evidence of the Rs standing up to Obama. I still have to shake my head at that logic.

Chaffetz’s idea is that it’s cool to renig on the debt and shutting the government is a good tactic for extracting concessions from Obama. We have already tried shutting down the government …twice. Apparently Chaffetz is a ssslllloooowwwww learner. Not paying our debts will have all sorts of ramifications. And shutting the government will get real expensive real quick. Especially if a crisis blows up. Generally compromise is how the two sides move forward but it’s obvious Chaffetz and his buddies don’t get that. They like scorched earth.
