Secondly, this says to me that something very illegal is going on in N. Carolina. and it needs to get investigated ASAP.
Here in Arizona we vote with paper ballots. You record your vote by filling in the oval next to your choice with black ink. Then it’s placed in a ballot box and the vote is automatically recorded as it enters the box. I will say this: I’m going to make sure that my vote is recorded correctly. I live in a relatively democratic part of a deeply red state so my vote likely won’t mean much but I still want it recorded correctly.
I’ve heard of all sorts of chicanery with respect to voting machines. From flips as your link describes to votes changing off site in some server. It’s 21st century ballot box stuffing. And it’s easier to hide.

Where I live we do the same by filling out the ballot by using a pen to block in the oval of your choice, but then we put it into an optical scan machine that counts the number of votes at our particular precinct. I just hope those optical scan machines aren’t doing anything hinky. I know they’re not Diebold machines though. I think this NC precinct must have the direct recording electronic system where you use a touchscreen to cast your vote.

The glass half full belief is that Nunn is getting out the African American, tending to be Democratic, and there’s much good feeling for her father. But I’m far removed from a Southern state’s voting habit.
