Discussion: GOPer Again Wants Counting Of Provisional Ballots Stopped In Tight Race

So many people keep defending her as “not a crazy”. Actions speak louder than words. She is trying to screw the voters in her district. That alone makes her untrustworthy and a “typical GOP crazy”.

I live in Tucson, too, and consider Mr. Barber a bit of a mediocrity, but at least he is not backed by party apparatus with a boatload of horrible ideas. Ms. McSally is, and if you think a new member of the House like her can be a rebel and independent thinker after receiving scads of Dark Money from the GOP machine, you are breathing smoke. Yes, her campaign signs and ads never flashed GOP credentials, but that’s strategy, not conviction.

This is the perfect example of why voters who are fully qualified to vote should not accept a provisional ballot. Every now and then we hear about a polling place that runs out of ballots, so voters are given provisional ones. It’s too easy for a situation like this to occur- lawyers arguing to throw out provisional ballots for reasons that have nothing to do with the validity of the people casting the votes.

Is there any requirement in Arizona law which require the signature of the poll worker? If so, doesn’t that provide an incentive for partisan poll workers to ‘forget’ to sign the ballots of people whom they suspect are voting the other way?

Put another way, are there more ballots signed by the democratic poll workers than by the republican ones?

It’s a pretty bad system of someone else’s error can invalidate your ballot.

If she’s that smart, why is she opening herself to the appearance of seeking to disenfranchise Latino citizens?

The only thing that is going to make Republicans happy is if we color code ballots - blue for Democrats and red for Republicans. Then count only the Red ones.

Compared to other in my state, norma, she is a moderate. Four years ago the son of Dan Quayle (Veep to GHW Bush) ran in north Phoenix-Paradise Valley. He ran an ad showing him hold in a baseball bat and saying “I’m gonna kick the hell outta DC”. Another ran an ad showing the candidate firing an automatic AK-47 at a target off screen and then declaring something about doing the same in DC. McSally is far from the most extreme of candidates here in AZ. Now … I did not vote for her and I don’t like the idea of anyone beimg restricted in their voting OR a candidate trying to influence the vote count by legal or illegal means. The vote count should be completely out of a candidates hands. Otherwise the election would be a fraud.

If your party depends on suppressing the vote to win, you should recheck your party platform. It might need tweaking.

Shrill beeyotch says what?

Theo, I still have the fliers that the PAC backing McSally sent out because they show how the dark money works. They are classic in their dirty tricks and plain lies that McSally can deny she had anything to do with. It’s classic Nixonian dirty tricks.
so you know…I DO NOT support republicans nor did I vote for McSally. The GOP I knew as a kid is long gone. But I also think that democrats could have done a much better job at campaigning than they did this time. They seemed wimpy to me. And they ran from Obama. That was wrong in my opinion.

Because the reporting on this is inaccurate. She’s trying to stop the counting on contested provisional ballots. They’re not specifically Hispanic voters. The article sort of implies that she’s cherry picking a heavily Hispanic county, but Pima county is about 70% of that district. This sort of ballot challenge happens all the time in every jurisdiction in every close race…and from both parties. I agree we should be counting all the votes and I don’t agree with McSally but painting her as a racist is ridiculous.

Isn’t this a required step if you are a Republican. All votes from non-whites are illegitimate. I think its part of their platform.

She’s running an aggressive race and I’m sure expects virtually all of the challenged ballots to be in, but it’s absolutely her right to challenge them and have it adjudicated and it’s not a sign that she’s a racist or a crazy person.

Voter Fraud n. 1. The underlying cause of any election outcome in which the Republican on the ballot has not been declared the winner.

She’s even a moderate for that district. So long as Al Melvin walks the halls of the legislature, she’ll be to the left of him.

I live in this district. It is incorrect to paint this as an issue about Hispanic votes. The count so far suggests that Pima County went very close to 50-50 McSally-Barber. The election is on a knife edge. The reason she wants to throw out as many provisional ballots as possible is simply that provisional ballots in general tend to skew quite strongly Democratic. This is true in any state, and is only tangentially related to Hispanics… there are all kinds of reasons, mostly related to class, for why provisional ballots tend to be more Democratic than regular ones.

As an aside, Barber ran a lousy race. McSally is kind of vacuous but she does have a certain charisma and is an effective politician. Regardless of how this turns out, the fact that Barber and McSally basically repeated their 50-50 result from 2012 is kind of astonishing, seeing as how far every other race shifted republican relative to then. I honestly don’t know how Barber managed to keep it close (and maybe even win…)

And also, let me just say that Ann Rodriguez is an incredibly good County Recorder and has been at this a long, long time. She won’t be bullied or bamboozled into poor decision making on this. She’s top notch and if the state weren’t so laughably Republican, she would be an excellent Secretary of State candidate.

Barber is a horrible candidate. I never understood how he won the first one with Kelly, much less the 2 races with McSally. Still, there’s a lot to be said for grinding out the tough ones. I think he’s going to be on the edge of losing for his whole congressional career because of the nature of that district. It’s very volatile. I wish it had voted Tom Volgy in way back when. He would have been a fantastic Congressman.

bla bla bla. So what? The votes should count and I don’t care who or what this b**** is.
