Discussion: GOP Transportation Panel Chair Bill Shuster Announces Retirement

he wants to focus his time and energy on working with President Donald Trump on legislation to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

His top legislative priority has been removing air traffic control operations from the government and placing them under the authority of a private, non-profit corporation.

So, anyone want to guess which airline he becomes a lobbyist for, assuming, of course, that he’s not appointed as the chief of the imaginary non-profit he wants to create?

The administration expects to release a detailed set of infrastructure principles in the new few weeks.

In other words, it will be one page written in glitter gel pen instead of a poorly done crayon drawing…

Translation: Bill wants to get in on the grift while the grifting is good.

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure, turn over the nation’s air space to a private entity…what could go wrong?!?

Lower pay for air controllers, less training, fewer regulations. I hate these people. More every day. Bring back the robber barons.

When your top legislative priority is a bill you cannot even get out of the committee you chair you’re a natural for a leadership position in the DT administration.

PA might be tough, but I think Rs Frelinghuysen, Lance and McArthur are goners in NJ.

Did you see all of the regulations the Trump administration gutted in the last few days of 2017? Major oil spill next year? - we can’t hold the oil company accountable for clean up. Nursing home abuse? - little recourse for the elderly patient. These are the things happening behind the scenes that will take so long to undo.

Back to the 1950’s. I guess r’s don’t care about a safe world for their children and grandchildren or Americans who work in the oil industry. Oops, I forgot, we want the country to be just like Texas.

The infrastructure grift will keep Shuster quite busy. He undoubtedly plans to become an infrastructure “consultant” for his piece of the pie.

Don’t be so cynical! Turning over other public functions, like prisons, has been highly successful. Maybe we could combine the two and have prisoners do air traffic control for $1.00 per day and commissary privileges.

In airline parlance, his flight has been cancelled.

And start a “non-profit” non-government air traffic control company.

Shorter Shuster:

I’m running away from Trump fast as I can … after I collect one last round of kickbacks from the transportation and construction industries.

They are also campaign opportunities. Every Dem House candidate should be trying to get an analysis of how every one of the regulatory changes might affect the people of their district.

In addtion, the national party should be coming up with scare stories for general use. My god, if the Dems can’t make hay from the GOP gift to shoddy nursing homes, I’ll have to vote for the Peace & Freedom party or some such. Test the scare stories, without the partisan element, on college-educated suburban Republicans (or any other appropriate targeting) and see what gets a reaction. Prep those for partisan campaigning closer to the election.

You should be running the DNC - these are great ideas.
