“I still believe we have the institutions of government that would restrain someone who seeks to exceed their constitutional obligations,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)
Says the cipher who gave us Sarah Palin. VOMIT.
yeh… that’ll work…
let’s see… we’ll make Obama a one term president…
give us control of the House and Senate and we’ll be the most productive Congress EVER…
don’t worry Donnie Dimwit is just in it for the publicity…
we’ll unite behind (fill in the name of your choice) to stop Donnie…
I’ll support him but I won’t endorse him…
we’ll rein him in… because the Constitution… see how well we’ve done our job blocking the SCOTUS nominee…
trust us
So, let me get this straight. The GOP puts a deranged ape (with apologies to our innocent simian cousins) on the ticket, then promises to keep him caged.
That’s so reassuring.
Great article, and headline.
What’s with the “We’re not Romania” line from McCain? “We’re not Turkmenistan” reigns more true for me. (sorry, horrible cross thread pun and riff on Bush which I couldn’t resist. Like Trump, I control my impulses—but only when they need controlling).
How exactly do the courts and Congress restrain the Commander in Chief?
How exactly do the courts and Congress run foreign policy?
How exactly do the courts and Congress negotiate treaties?
Don’t worry, if President Trump orders a tactical nuclear strike on Iran, will file a law suit so fast it will make your head spin!
Yep, with Tom Cotton as lead plaintiff,
I think I remember some people complaining about the current POTUS overstepping the constitution, how does that fit into the current argument ?
What could go wrong?
“If Donald Trump turns out to be an autocratic president, running the country with pen and phone irregardless of the Constitution,”
Back in college, I misused “less” for “fewer.” My Professor told me I had made “an illiterate mistake.” I never made that error again.
We could all use a teacher like him.
If Trump becomes President, the literacy rate in the US will skyrocket over night… if you use the ability to understand the President’s sentences as the measure of literacy, that is.
Exactly the picture in my head!
Quite right. There are innumerable ways a capricious psychotic could use the vast powers of the presidency to wreak havoc. Since he’s clearly insane, I wouldn’t discount the possibility that he would use some crisis (traceable to his actions, undoubtedly) as a precept to declare martial law and suspend Habeas Corpus. The military would likely rebel and then we’d have civil war. No, milquetoast GOPers, you wouldn’t restrain this lunatic in any meaningful way.
Roflmfao .
GOPs - " Mr President , you cannot do that " .
Mr President - " The voters voted me in so you can f*** o** " .
Because…Worst. President. Ever! Whereas, Mr. Trump will be the Greatest President Ever. Just ask him.
I see what you did there. Well played. That one gave me the old fingernails down the chalkboard too.
Sen McCain: “I still believe we have the institutions of government"…to protecf America from our nominee.
Sen McConnell :“What protects us in this country against big mistakes”, like nominating a dangerous idiot…
I’m just waiting for the next hilarious quote. Maybe Herman Cain can return to say, “I mean, we’re not Ubecky-becky-beckstan.”
Since Newt Gingrich, the Republican Party has widened every crack in our institutions’ structure to gain even small or temporary advantages. Now they expect the same institutions to save them from their own stupidity.
Trump will be able to hold together enough of a block of allies to thwart any attempt to control him.
Ann Kirkpatrick and Russ Feingold are guaranteed to stop the authoritarian Rump better than John McCain, Ron Johnson etc.
Well, like they say in Hollywood, it works on so many levels.
