Discussion: GOP Softens On Scalia Replacement, But Retains High Bar

Discussion for article #246094

A scenario where the Democrats win the White House and retake the Senate isn’t all that unlikely. Then I guess Republicans will simply have to filibuster.

We’ll get our government back when these lunatics are all dead.

But why would a tactic from such a shrewd political tactician require finessing?

Finessing? I don’t think so. There is no finessing what they said and the fallout from it

Supreme Court recess appointments have been overwhelmingly successful–eleven out of twelve historically. So all they have to do is call a recess, let Obama do his duty, then filibuster a vote to deny the appointment until America straightens itself out. Simple. May take some time for the straightening out part.

Or after the 2020 census and redistricting, whichever comes first

Translation: Yeah…we’ll hold a vote…right…(and it will be a cold day in hell
before we approve any nomination by that Kenyan dictator usurper.)

OK…you got your vote…now what? Oh sorry…not enough time before election day.
Guess we’ll have to wait.

Hopefully by then, polls may already be showing the potential electoral disaster facing the GOP,
but then again, GOP leaders have never been very good at reading polls (witness Karl Rove).

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), warned that saying ‘no’ to a nominee “sight unseen” could give the impression that the Republicans were being “obstructionists,” and leave a bad taste in voters’ mouths just months ahead of a presidential election. Still, Tillis set a nearly impossible standard for who would be worthy of Republican consideration, saying it would be unwise for the GOP to ignore a candidate that had “an identical resume and capabilities of Justice Scalia.”

Out of the mouths of boobs…

McConnell is going to have a bad fall from power.

But see? He’s giving Obama a way to get a justice through - we just need to offer them another Scalia.

This has always been a major part of this SCOTUS nominee story:

“Which, how many, how much reelection trouble and where… of vulnerable Senators up for reelection”

“How, in what manner and when to hammer them with messaging of the consequences of not cooperating”

The somnolent manner in which Democrats “defended” vulnerable Senators in 2014 left a lot to be desired…and, even allowing for the “usual” increase in Democratic constituencies voting in a Presidential year, Republicans are aware that Dem constituencies are nowhere as reliable as, say, evangelicals.

If Republicans actually thought that they were to be as reliable, then the Senate Confirmation vote would be held.

And who knows what they would vote? Lawrence O’Donnell had an expert on his show last night who said that the possibility of actual confirmation was low…but he did not rule out rejection of confirmation.

their idea of finess is using extra course grit sand paper to wipe a babies ass…

St. Ronnie Raygun had a different take on SCOTUS appointments that Senator Yertle has.

“In the year ahead, we’re not going to be on the defensive, shoring up problems and answering our critics. We are moving forward, and I have no doubt that when we look back 1988 will be a year of great accomplishment toward our goals. This is the year when Judge Anthony Kennedy will be confirmed and the Supreme Court will again be brought up to full strength. The Federal judiciary is too important to be made a political football. I would hope, and the American people should expect, not only for Judge Kennedy’s confirmation but for the Senate to get to work and act on 27 other judicial nominations that have been left in limbo for quite awhile now.”

Why doesn’t McConnell insist that Bernie and Hillary abandon their campaigns and forfeit to the GOP? That makes as much sense as leading the Senate to abandon their constitutional responsibility to hold confirmation hearings! McConnell is a virus.

While I really don’t understand why they want Clinton or Sanders to make the nomination, I think Obama should nominate Bill Ayers. The Republicans would immediately lose about ten percent of their voters to strokes and heart attacks.

Mitch McConnell is BREAKING the law. He took an oath to uphold the Constitutions of the United States. He has on TOO many occasions tried to OVERTHROW our President by making FALSE statements. He is a traitor and should be taken to JAIL for treason, He is a FALSE profit of the Constitution. He needs to be held accountable for his deeds to keep the PROMISE he made to make sure Our President’s term in office whould be a failed one and in doing has clearly stated to undermine this president’s RIGHT to fulfill HIS elected duties.

I think McConnell may be losing his ability to remember some of his previous promises such as to make Obama a one term president. I sure hope this is the case.

“Finessing”? Please. The GOP has all of the subtlety of a Mel Brooks Movie.
