Discussion: GOP Senators Push Back Against Trump's Relentless McCain Attacks

oooooo

What courage.

“I look forward to soon re-introducing my legislation re-naming the Senate Russell Building after American hero, Senator John McCain,” tweeted Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

This is why we lose.

When deplorable people elect a deplorable person they should anticipate deplorable behavior.
Like many here, I was not an admirer of John McCain, but this is beneath contempt.

Wake me when those traitorous motherfuckers actually defy the Traitor-in-Chief about something substantive.

[In other words, a longer version of "what blandsten said.’]

Mittens Romney: “I don’t understand why the President would, once again, disparage a man as exemplary as my friend John McCain…”
Um, narcissistic personality disorder, perhaps?

Sen. Lindsey Graham, who wept openly on the Senate floor after McCain died but has allied himself strongly with Trump, said, “I think the president’s comments about Sen. McCain hurt him more than they hurt the legacy of Sen. McCain.”

Fuck off, Lindsey. You’re as bad as the Traitor-in-Chief.

McCain’s Trump’s Puck. Even from the grave.

This week, Trump unloaded a new series of anti-McCain tweets in which he said he never had been “a fan” and never would be.

Ask not if there’s anything wrong with Donald Trump. Ask if there’s anything not wrong with him.

All 13 of them. Wow what an overwhelming response from the majority party in the Senate.

Protect the decorum and institution and it all, ahmi right?

I thought it was some rather amusing trolling of the President. Trump’s ego is so fragile he is still upset about not being invited to McCain’s funeral. Next step is passing a nonbinding resolution that McCain is a war hero.

I don’t like it when he says things about my friend John McCain.

At least Isakson sounds like an angry grownup. This is how a timid 4-year-old talks.

To all of the brave Republicans who stood by while all norms, common decency and the Constitution were trampled and decided to make their stand on this issue - fuck you.

Trump has obviously been stewing about McCain’s funeral for months - he makes preening Hollywood actors look like Ghandi’s. He has the emotional stability of a teenager on a meth bender.

I take your point[*], but you have to agree that having Richard Russell’s name on that building is an every-day slap in the face for African-Americans and for all Americans who ever cared about civil rights.

Say what you will about John McCain but at least he was not a disgusting racist.

[*] I assume there’s some other Senator you’re thinking of who deserves the honor more than McCain does.

I got that sense, too – but there are only so many Senate temples one can re-name, and even devoting another one to the memory of yet another Republican is unlikely to earn Schumer the slightest bit of forgiveness from the likes of Mitch McConnell.

(“Forgiveness” for what? For being a Democrat, of course!)

Why only non-binding?!

They left off that Lindsey added, “It makes me feel very sad and also like I can’t go tinkle.”

If he forces them to push back here then they might learn Trump isn’t the holy terror they believe. He can’t primary all of them and if they hang together they can stand up to him. Trump is playing with fire. Pretty soon his base will be down to 30% or less.

To drag it out as long as possible. Non-binding first, then when Trump complains about it, do an official one that Trump has to sign (or veto!) Would be nice to put Graham on the spot for either honoring his friend or submitting to Trump.
