Discussion: GOP Senators Doubt Magic Growth Estimates, Push 11th-Hour Tax Rewrite

Whatever they’re up to, it’s not to help average Americans. There’s simply zero doubt left that the Republican Party is, first and foremost, the party of 21st century robber barons.

First rule of modern politics:

NEVER believe any promise about something that Congress will do in the future. What they do, they can always undo, and the flat out bottom line on this tax bill is a massive transfer of wealth to the wealthiest. That is the sole reason for this mountain of horse feces. They have NO intention of giving any of it back if they get it and even if they do, they will find seven new ways to achieve the same goal in the meantime, not least of them gutting the social safety net “because we can’t afford it.”

Everything about this bill has been “11th Hour.” No hearings, no experts, no amendments, no input, no truth. Resist

This is a brazen attempt to ignore the will of the American people in order to satisfy the DONOR CLASS.

The bald-faced and shocking dishonesty of this piece of crap is breathtaking. They give various middle-class tax breaks which end in 10 years. If they are not renewed, the middle class gets shafted. If they are renewed, the deficit is massively increased.

“Both Lankford and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) have pointed to the fiscal disaster in Kansas that resulted from a slew of massive tax cuts as a cautionary tale that should not be repeated on the federal level.”

Clearly, Kansas just didn’t clap hard enough.

Trickle Down cannot fail; it can only be failed.

Even if you ignore for the moment that this bill is shifting money from the middle class to the rich…

The economic impact of this bill is over-rated.

We have a decent economy, the biggest concern now is not the need for a stimulus but more likely inflation…which would drive interest rates up.

A tax cut is an unneeded stimulus. It is likely to lead to inflation.

Have the brainiacs behind this bill figured in the cost of higher interest rates on the national debt that would coincide with inflation? Do they even care?

These guys say they have to do something,.,…wait a minute. Jumping of a cliff is doing something…better to do nothing than do something stupid

“What if we don’t get 0.4 percent growth?” he asked, citing the number touted by GOP leadership as resulting directly from tax cuts.

I believe, as someone pointed out yesterday, that he’s referring to 4% growth, not 0.4%

ETA: Grassley, in article:

“We have economists saying that if the economy will grow four-tenths of one percent, it’ll pay for itself,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told TPM, adding that he is vehemently opposed to Corker and Lankford’s trigger idea.

I assume that what he meant - be nice if you asked the question, TPM - that if the economy grows .4% more than it is right now, the tax cuts would pay for themselves. But is anybody suggesting that growth of .4% more than today is possible over decades? I can’t imagine a quarter or two would help much.

so dynamic scoring is now “magic growth estimates” and with no CBO score. This is the way the GOP hopes to secure its majority thru 2020… repealing the ACA mandate And axing 25 billion in medicare…screwing the middle and lower classes…thinking they wont notice…

On the one hand, at long last calling bullshit on the supposed growth effect of tax cuts for brazillionaires, on the other hand, devising a cowardly plan to avoid ever having to vote for a tax increase.

A tax bill scribbled on a cocktail napkin at lunch. It almost worked with Obamacare repeal, so why not?

I want an explanation on why they are raising our taxes by removing the SALT deductions.

I seriously hope this bill does the death it desreves.

These assholes are pond scum who can’t drop dead fast enough for the nation.

Is Republicans learning???

They won’t notice. They’ve been conditioned over the last 50 years to believe that Democrats are evil and the source of all of their problems. The Republican’t Party has become a dangerous death cult…

Still, most GOP lawmakers insist, without citing their sources, that the tax bill won’t increase the deficit at all, let alone by more than $1 trillion.
“It will pay for itself,” declared Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA). “I would not vote for this bill if I thought it was going to increase the deficit.”
“Now, it might in the short term,” Kennedy allowed. “But in the medium term and the long term, I think it will pay for itself.”

Wasn’t it another Republican from Louisiana, Bobby Jindal, who said “We don’t want to be the ‘stupid party.’” Another nail in that overly sealed coffin.

Krugman: “As a result, in the first few years most middle-class families would see modest tax cuts.”

The real measure of the electorate is: will this be enough to distract them while their pocket is being picked via higher health care costs, elimination of SALT deductions, and the elimination of most functions of government they rely on to ameliorate the inevitable budget deficit…

what is the “economic driver” behind this tax bill, we know there is a “insanely wealthy greed driver”, but what economic signals are being interpreted as saying “we need this billionaire tax break right now, or…”

also, someone should ask tRUmp if Putin wants tRUmp to sign this billionaire tax break

edit: there was not one word in the entire article that I recall saying that Dems had ANY input in this bill, quoting Corker “We’ve been working throughout the entire Thanksgiving break on it, working closely with the administration, and some members of the Finance Committee”
but no Dems, at all, Americans with Democratic representatives have NO say in this whatsoever

[/quote]The signals are: We have a Republican House, Republican Senate, and a Republican President. Oh, wait…those aren’t “economic” signals. Those are “opportunity” signals.

“That way you’re in a situation where you’re not creating deficits, should the projections laid out not be real,” Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) explained to reporters Monday night.

Can this guy actually be serious??? WTF??? Questioning dynamic forecasting is heresy to Republicans. Fantasy is the complete foundation of the entire Republican beliefs system. Creating a backstop in case they’re wrong about anything is practically the same thing as admitting that 30-year old men hitting on 14 year old girls is wrong. Republicans simply cannot create even the illusion that they might possibly be wrong about anything. That would be TETWOWKI.
