Discussion: GOP Senators Begin To Push Back On Trump's Migrant Family Separations

You are correct, I misspoke badly. “Vote to convict.”

This is only a hand slap…and in the world we are in (with a prez who wishes we were at N Korean level obedience and praise…with a bunch of rabid followers wanting that too), 10 Senators putting their name on a hand slap is noteworthy.

And it would not have happened last week.

And it’s not good enough on this issue.

All this time has passed and they can only get to “begin” to push back?

Only one of the two Oregon Senators (D) are signed onto this when they both agree on this issue. This implies a strategic choice.

Who wants their place in history given their total lack of principle?

The only way to get Agent Orange to read it is if it has some pictures of Agent Orange between the words.

I wonder why Cory Booker didn’t sign it? He wrote a very nice piece for Vox about his trip to the border.

This is truly not meant as a slam, though I am admittedly frustrated,

Why, from the start, have Democrats not demanded in whatever way possible - even if only through the media - that psychologists be brought in to evaluate the separated children?

It simply seems a logical response, particularly given the spotty reports of how the children were being treated, including isolated from touch.

How could anyone be against an independent evaluation of their emotional state. And if someone is, there’s the hammer. Democrats could rally folks to respond to the wayward reps.

I just don’t have any sense there’s a strategy on any of the many battles, other than to quibble over the wording of the midterm tagline.

Just a palette cleanser in between courses of Trump’s taint. Is ineffectual too strong a word?

Do small monthly donations to the ACLU - they are kicking ass

Yup Cantwell and Murray are missing too. Murray has been okay on this - not as forceful publicly as I would like but working behind the scenes doing what she can as ranking minority member of hhs committee .

Cantwell doesn’t do as much but both were cosponsors of the keep families together act. So if they’re missing from this letter it’s either a tactical choice by the letter writers to achieve “balance” or an (accurate) indication that this a bare minimum letter and they advocate more forceful response

It’s not meant ot have a comprehensive list of signers.

Good on all the signers. May many more do so too.

Most MO Dems are going to vote for McCaskill. She’s got decent progressive creds, but we all know that we’re living in a red state and that Claire’s gotta do what she’s gotta do to convince the conservatives in the rural areas to give her enough support to stay in office. That’s how the game is played in the midwest, where the cities are deep blue, but the rural population outnumbers us.

Murkowski and Collins usually hold out for top dollar for their votes th at screw democrats. It’s the kids that she won’t sell out? I don’t believe it. She wants a new house. She has no morals . She’ll screw the democrats again. So will Manchin. He’s a total dick. He wants the money too.

The hatred from the rural areas is awesome.

They’re inbred. They can’t help it.

Lack of contact with people who are different breeds fear of the unknown. The most racist people tend to be those that have never met a brown person. The most homophobic are those that don’t know any LGBQs. So, yeah, rural folks have a lot of fear, which manifests as hatred. But hey, they’ve been saved by Jesus so, their hatred must be okay, right?

No, many racists claim that they are not racist because they have minority family members or friends.

It’s more complicated.

Whereas, all of us who comment here have dinner with our rural relatives every week, right? :grinning:

Or we have a pleasant conversation with our conservative Republican friends over a cup of joe down at Mel’s Diner every morning?
