“I saw this in Baghdad. We’ve seen it again in Afghanistan," Cotton said

This is the beginning of every statement he will make for the next 8 years.

“First, the claim that too many criminals are being jailed, that there is over-incarceration, ignores an unfortunate fact: for the vast majority of crimes, a perpetrator is never identified or arrested, let alone prosecuted, convicted, and jailed. Law enforcement is able to arrest or identify a likely perpetrator for only 19 percent of property crimes and 47 percent of violent crimes. If anything, we have an under-incarceration problem."

I’m really hating 2014.

I just don’t know why…

“I saw this in Baghdad. We’ve seen it again in Afghanistan," Cotton said in a question-and-answer session after his speech, according to Politico. "Security has to come first, whether you’re in a war zone or whether you’re in the United States of America.”

ask him about police militarization now…

Tom Cotton needs to be kicked so hard in the balls that he’ll have to open his mouth to pee.

Yes agreed, here is a traitorous prick that should be in prison for sedition.

He should make a friend with either a basic grasp of logic or simple common sense who could explain to this Ivy-educated lummox why unsolved crimes and overincarceration are not mutually exclusive. JFC he’s just hopeless and needs a minder, seriously.

This on the same day Dennis Hastert’s prison date is set. I agree, Senator Cotton, not enough of you assholes are incarcerated.

I just want to tell the next Democratic challenger to Sen Cotton that this wingnut beat Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln lost her reelection before that because the Republican Party wants crazy-ass whack, and Cotton delivers the goods. What the Democrats want is someone who stands proudly for Democratic ideals – unlike Pryor and Lincoln. If you want to unseat Tom Cotton, be loud and liberal. Otherwise, Democrats will stay home on election day.

It does seem like an unusual comparison. I suppose he’s comparing what he saw on the streets of Baghdad with what happens in, say, Little Rock. Hard for me to understand how that’s comparable in any relevant way other than to tie him into the equation as a star in a war story.
Security in a war zone is a lot different than security someplace else. Seems like he’s trying too hard to shoehorn that war zone into the debate.

I see we have a runner-up category for dumbest Senator in Congress. Ron Johnson has already taken first place imo.

OT – But has TPM changed fonts recently…at least on its front page? They look like they’ve been experimenting lately. Either that or my computer has some settings that have shifted that I don’t know about.

Cotton warned of the effect of releasing former inmates back into their communities.

  • is he suggesting that even inmates who have served their full sentence time - not be released ? - - I know some states have been doing this for certain sex offenders - and I fail to understand how they get away with eternal indefinite incarceration

What a disingenuous piece of shit this disingenuous piece of shit is. Contender for the title of America’s Worst and Dumbest Congress-critter.

“Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said that the United States suffers from an ‘under-incarceration’ problem.”

Tim’s ayatollah besties in Iran have tackled that whole “under-incarceration” thing admirably.

Cotton would feel much more at home there.

Other “problems” the GOP sees in addition not enough people in prison…

  • not enough poor people
  • too many people have health insurance
  • too many working people make too much money
  • not enough military spending
  • voting is way too easy for minorities and college students

I predict he’ll end up on Trump’s short list of Veep candidates. He’d fit Trump perfectly in the asshole department and give him some “national security” cover that Donald’s lacking.

Let’s start correcting the problem right now with some politicians. Start with “W.”

I bet a majority of the GOP would be perfectly happy throwing everyone in prison who doesn’t vote GOP.
