I think there’s room for compromise here:
A Democratic President can’t nominate Supreme Court justices in the final year of his term.
And GOP Senators can’t introduce, debate, or vote on anything in the final year of their terms.

Regardless of what some are willing to admit publicly, everybody knows any nominee submitted in the middle of this presidential campaign isn’t getting confirmed. Everybody. The White House knows it. Senate Democrats know it. Republicans know it. Even the press knows it,” Grassley said in the statement, according a version released at the start of the meeting.

It’s not like people didn’t discuss the possibility that a new President would nominate Justices, either:
Senate Republicans have no legs to stand on here. But then, they’re shameless enough to not care how their naked power grab will play out in the history books.
