Discussion: GOP Sen.: We Should Confirm SCOTUS Nom 'Quickly' If We Lose The Election

GOP now means ā€œgaming on principleā€

Thanks for pointing out that ā€œthe next president should nominate the justiceā€ is a complete sham. Not that anyone needed any help seeing through that.

Glad to see that politics plays no part in the serious deliberations of the GOP conTROLLed senate!!!111111!!!

I know Obama can’t do this, but I’d be elated if he withdrew his nomination now. Unfortunately, the risk is that Trump would ā€œactually be elected presidentā€. Seems like a good bet to me to withdraw the nomination and kick these losers in their too-white teeth. Then again, this is not a viable risk for Obama, yet. I hope the GOP debates this quandary until it is too late to confirm Obama’s man. Then he and / or Hillary can retract the nomination if so desired (not sure how that’d play for the nominee however - but he’s really only a pawn in the game at this point anyhow).

If this comes to pass, the justification will undoubtedly be that the voters chose a Democrat and one Democrat’s pick is as good as another’s.

In other words, this is a perfectly acceptable nominee for SCOTUS and the GOP is simply playing politics with the Court.

Always putting the best interest of the country first, it is comforting to see the GOP once again sticking with their well reasoned principles and once again giving the SCOTUS their proper respect. These heroes are an inspiration to us all.

(my kids have informed me that today is opposite day)

Only the President could withdraw the nomination. The nomination would end the day the President left office, as well. Nominations don’t roll over.

They’re slipping - they’re actually starting to openly discuss their reasons for their sleazy actions.

Obama’s pick is too moderate and too old. Hillary should choose, when elected.

why do the delusional keep trying to qualify the upcoming election by saying ā€˜IF’?

How about this? IF it becomes increasingly obvious that Hillary is going to win the election (as 99% of polls predict), then President Obama should withdraw the nomination around mid-October. Maybe say that Garland decided he didn’t want to be a political football anymore.

And then watch Republican heads explode as the fact sinks in that they’re going to be utterly destroyed in November.

TPM:

ā€œIf we come to a point, I’ve said all along, where we’re going to lose the election or we lose the election in November, then we ought to approve him quickly, because I’m certain he’ll be more conservative than a Hillary Clinton nomination come January,ā€ Flake said.

Shorter Flake:

The voters should have a voice in choosing the next Supreme Court Justice … unless we don’t like their choice.

President Obama believes in his choice and won’t withdraw Justice Garland’s name, BUT he can do it if he wants to. It’s entirely within his prerogative, though if he decided to go that route it would more likely take the form of asking Garland to personally withdraw instead.

But other than that, yeah, I totally agree. The GOP should be made to pay a very high price for their obstruction.

How about this scenario - even if Trump somehow wins, if the Dems take the Senate they can confirm Garland in early January. All Obama needs to do is renominate him in the 2 weeks he is still President. Imagine the heads exploding over that!
