“I think the party is strong for a couple reasons. One, we’re in a period in our country’s history, sadly, where we have a threat from abroad again. And people tend to look to Republicans to help protect the country,” Portman said in response.
No they don’t. They remember that your party withdrew from Afghanistan and launched Operation Iraqi Clusterf**k.
Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) on Thursday suggested that the national debate about the Islamic State and terrorism has likely strengthened the Republican party recently.
But at what cost?
Oh snap!
I forgot. These are Republicans.
And Republicans could care lees about costs. Monetary costs and human lives mean nothing to them. Short term political gain is always the focus.
“One, we’re in a period in our country’s history, sadly, where we have a threat from abroad again. And people tend to look to Republicans to help protect the country,” Portman said in response.
A Republican president allowed the worst attack on American civilians in our history.
A Republican president let the 9/11 attack happen.
He does have a point. After the WTC was knocked down because GWBush was asleep at the switch, every time there was a new “Terror Threat”…awww never mind. I just get sick thinking that Americans believe that Republicans are good at doing anything that’s good for the country as a whole.
These seniors include many who were doing their best to avoid Military Service 47 years ago or so.
Littlegirlblue spoke of Portman and his ilk “escorting their children to Army recruiting stations so the children can back up their parent’s bullshit”.
In their craven guile, Republicans know that they can exploit fear of ISIL for political gain without repercussions of “recruiting stations” for their children…NOR repercussions from ANY young people, in our Military Draft-free society, who would be providing the feet filling the Boots On The Ground in the Middle East.
In addition, being free from the danger of journalistic practices like “follow-up questions from reporters”–because of a criminally negligent MSM–people like Portman will never have to explain or be held to account for any military or foreign policy strategy.
Because I’m fair enough to give people the benefit of the doubt. They’ve now squandered that.
To be clear, I have no doubt that SOME small group of them always believed this way (i.e., the Gellers and Gaffneys). I honestly believe others, at least at first, were simply speaking out of anger and hurt, bigotry and/or recognition of the perceived political advantages while oblivious to the damage they were causing or assistance they were providing to groups like ISIS. But, like I said, they’ve now turned the corner. It is no longer deniable that this reactionary extremism provides encouragement and aid to groups like ISIS, particularly since it has gotten so out of control at this point that they’re openly flirting with acknowledging they view further attacks and fear-based mayhem as politically advantageous. It is no longer negligence or blind self-serving political gamesmanship. It is knowing, intentional and deliberate. I never believed I would in my lifetime be hearing the echoes of Hitler’s rhetoric and policies bouncing about the Capitol Building, Amurikkkan airwaves and presidential election debate and then watching it treated as though it deserves anything but merciless and unmitigated condemnation and scorn.
So, my point is just that I now apply it to them all generally. They’ve gone that far off the deep end that a nuanced distinction is no longer warranted. They WANT attacks. They WANT mayhem, death and fear. They believe that it is to their advantage and care about nothing but how it will (they believe) give them control over the country. They KNOW that they are engaged in a feedback loop that is only strengthening ISIS and assisting them in their efforts to sell their extremism…and it’s no longer that they don’t care; THEY LIKE IT.
Really? 9/11. . . Iraq . . . .Afganistan . . . . Worst recession since the Great Depression? Yeah, right! The Repugs sure do know how to protect the country!
Here’s the thing: I do believe what I said is true but how Dems would get this message out there WITHOUT sounding as if they’re starting a huge generational war is beyond me. I’m old myself so I can see both sides of this coin.
littlegirlblue: Sure, talk of ISIS will help the R party in the same way talk about weapons of mass destruction being in “Baghdad and Tikrit and east, west, north and south” of those places helped the R party.
“I hope that we focus on that note more, not just for political advantage but because the world has become a very dangerous place,” Rubio continued.
rubio just admitted that they were using it for political advantage. these guys are totally tone deaf.
I was hoping you’d come into this conversation. So, - Portman went into a “tele Town Hall” trying to get a feel for how seniors are gonna react to the latest SS/Medicare privatization scheme but then he arrived at fear of ISIS cutting their throats in their beds. Yep, the codgers (a bit older than myself) have decided that SOMETHING MUST BE DONE - that doesn’t involve their grandkids going into the sandbox. You know, those others - let them go…
I really feel that the Dems have to find a way to get this out there (without the use of my capital letters) in a way that highlights who pays the price for stoking fear.
