Discussion: GOP Scrambles To Keep 'Dark Lord Of Coal Country' From WV Senate Nomination

he could triumph next month and cost them another winnable race in the fall while embarrassing the state.

After seeing part of a single episode of Buckwild I didnā€™t think embarrassing West Virginia was even remotely possible.

Watching Trump blather on about ā€œso much oil in ANWARā€ suggests that the GOP is back on a carbon jag. Rick van der Ploeg, a Dutch economist, has noted that this happens in resource economies at the cusp of a regime change, or the Green Paradox. So the reappearance of the Dark Lord of Coal at this moment in history shouldnā€™t be surprising. We should be more surprised if he didnā€™t show up. Drill, baby, drill, or Decap Mountains, baby, decap mountains, in the WV case.

ā€œIf the election was held today, Don would win,ā€ one plugged-in West Virginia Republican told TPM late last week. ā€œAlabama gave us Roy Moore. Now West Virginiaā€™s saying ā€˜hold my beer."

GOP is the party of crazy, now just a death cult rather than a political entity.

West Virginia is not only asking the rest of the country to hold their beer, theyā€™re also asking that they hold three shots of Jack, a shot of tequila, a raspberry flavored blunt and their crack pipe.

8 years ago I would have enthusiastically agreed with you.

3 years ago, I would have nodded along.

Now? Not so much.

So hereā€™s a GOP candidate so sleazy even trump wonā€™t touch him; so corrupt even National Republicans are burning more than half a million bucks to deep six him, and if the primary were held tomorrow, heā€™d win.

Sounds like these National Republicans donā€™t have much control over the Republican Party anymore.

Nah this guy is radioactive
Roy Moore 2.0
He will attract the knuckle dragging 30 % that vote in primaries

Why, the GOP just canā€™t imagine how WV Republicans could support a wealthy con artist with a history of screwing over working people, and who now spews fact-free lies all day. Itā€™s a total shock to them.

Blankenship is pure evil. He bought a W.Va Supreme Court seat to change the balance on the court so that the court majority would throw out a multi-million verdict against his company for, if I recall correctly, other safety failures. His pet judge cast the deciding vote. The failure of that judge to recuse himself after Blankenship had donated more money to a PAC supporting him then his entire campaign had raised led to a US Supreme Court decision that is not far from the mold of Citizens United in terms of refusing to acknowledge realistically the corrupting influence of money. CJ Roberts in dissent wrote a series of over the top rhetorical questions that mock the idea that one can determine bias in a judge suuficidnt to warrant recusal unless he or she is a party to the action. (Ok. I overstated that a little, but not by much.)

I think the Democrats need to do a bit more than point out GOP failure, which is obvious. Sweden went through this in 2015, and just said, hey, we have to have renewable energy. Solar, wind, hydro, smart grids, 100% green electricity options for corporations and consumers, etc. Coal and nukes gone. The messaging has to be, and maybe you can copywrite something that sells, is that we must do this now and you will have a job if we do it. Renewable energy job growth has averaged about 15% a year over the past 25 years, even doing well in the wake of the 2009 global financial crisis.

ā€œThe Republican Party swampers in Washington have come to the surface to oppose my candidacy for the U.S. Senate. They are swamp creatures who pretend to be conservatives but are instead liberal big spenders. We welcome the fact that they are showing themselves to be what they truly are,ā€ he said in a statement

Is there a place that republicans keep this script and then pull it out to spout? Roy Moore used a similar tact. I just dont understand how their voters fall for this nonsense. It just sounds so stupid, especially since the same people that supposedly hate Washington have voted for the folks that are in there now.

ā€œDon has stated unequivocally that they made them change the airflow in that mine and thatā€™s what led to that tragedy. Iā€™m not a coal miner, Iā€™m a urologist, but he makes a very convincing argument about it,ā€ he said

Nope not my fault. It was someone else that made me do it.

Can someone please tell me how Republicans became the Party of self responsibility?I

ā€œIā€™m not sure if he can even vote. Do they let ankle bracelets get out of the house?ā€ quipped National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Cory Gardner (R-CO) when TPM asked about Blankenshipā€™s chances.

Omgthatssofunny. /s :frowning:

Oh and if the killer gets the nom, you can bet the Party will line up behind him. Count on it.
