Discussion: GOP Rep. Switched Vote On Refugee Bill After Pressure From Colleagues

he caved

Two things…

  1. “Profile in No Courage”

“He said that he has seen some use the issue for “political leverage” over the past few days, and that lawmakers are reacting to concerns from constituents.”

Um, he used his vote switch to get a seat at the table for future discussions…I’m pretty sure that’s “political leverage” is it not?

He demanded that he have “seat at the table on all future discussions on this issue,” and once an agreement was met, Russell switched his vote.

What’s there to discuss if the bill becomes law, which is what your vote signified a desire for, in the affirmative?

Maybe later he will say he was just following orders.

> “… lawmakers are reacting to concerns from constituents.”

To whatever extent that’s true, fine. But the problem is that way too many lawmakers are doing their best to encourage concerns … and fears, and worse, by taking advantage of constituents’ unfamiliarity with the refugee process instead of educating them.

Right wingers are cockroaches, they should be exterminated as such in the voting booth.

Shouldn’t that be that they react to a concern expressed by a majority of their constituents???

As I commented in another tread —

It doesn’t matter what you say if it is not backed by your action –

Typical Republican. . . no integrity.

Doesn’t 2/3 of 435 = 290, not 289? Even with one vacant seat (thanks Boehner!) 2/3 of 434 is 289.333 so does that third of a rep just come with the 289 others?

Americans are scared? That’s bullshit. I’m not. No one I know is scared. You are telling us to be scared because our country is “weak”, “not great”, and we have a “feckless” President. Your anti-American sentiments are repulsive.

How did Pastor Bob respond when you told him that stuff wasn’t true?

If he switched that easily, then his convictions aren’t all that. Gelatinous orbs have more commitment.

Doesn’t matter now

He might as get ready for a primary challenge.

Doesn’t matter.

He sold his vote cheap.

The house leadership doesn’t owe him.

Ask that question again December 11th

Ah, for one brief shining moment, a Conservative stood by his stated principles … then capitulated to the fear and demagoguery of the actual principles of his fellow Conservatives and reversed himself.

Typical Republican: big talk, no walk.

"Americans are scared. That’s why you saw such an overwhelming vote — a veto-proof vote — on the floor that transcended parties, because the constituents are telling their representatives, ‘You need to put a stop to this.’ "

Oh, THAT’S why we saw a veto-proof vote! Here I thought we saw a veto-proof vote because you folded on your principles and made it one. And when you have your “seat at the table,” what good will that do, besides your self-aggrandizement? You’ve already shown that you’ll sell out, the rest is just haggling.
