“Costello’s decision comes after the state Supreme Court redrew the congressional map in Pennsylvania”
Given that he will now have to compete with Democrats on a more fairly drawn map, suddenly spending more time with his family is very appealing.
Another GOP snowflake melts away.
If you’re not going to let me win, I’m not gonna play.
How many quitters nationwide does this make?
25% of the desired total—not enough.
Man, he’s pathetic.
I think the underlying reality that Congresscritters like Costello need to contend with is the changing views of suburban voters. Chester County, PA, a Philadelphia exurb that used to be rock-ribbed Republican, now has a Democratic majority. Romney carried the county in 2012, though just barely, but Hillary won it by 9 points in 2016. It’s partly changing demographics (more minorities, fewer WASPS), partly the moderation of suburban voters, especially women.
Yeah…I think he was probably going to run away rather than run again anyway…but the redistricting gave him cover. That damn…ungerrymandered map. Damn them for their fair and balanced map. What do they think this is…a democracy or something. Jeez.
This redrawn district means I don’t get the voters I selected. That is too much democracy for me and my funders.
Clearly this guy isn’t cut out for Trump’s GOP. He missed 2 of the hallmark excuses/blames:
-
He does not make a strangely reasoned accusation directly against Obama (or Hillary), and
-
he doesn’t take a parting jab at the Deep State.
Suggests to me that perhaps he was also going to get teapartied in the primary.
Ryan Costello:
he was leaving Congress due to the current “political environment.
Because he can’t win without cheating.
Mr. Costello, meet John Bolton.
Mr. Costello, meet Steve Bannon.
Mr. Costello, meet Steve King.
Mr. Costello, meet Corey Lewandowski.
Mr. Costello, meet Sebastian Gorka.
Mr. Costello, meet …
MAJOR REPORTING FAIL: Pennsylvania judges, up to and including Supreme Court, are NOT appointed, they are ELECTED! A majority of the VOTERS CHOSE the judges on the court. And the district as it was drawn, like its neighbor the current 7th, was drawn to guarantee a GOP win. Both redrawn districts will now be competitive but “drawn to favor Democrats” is the GOP spin on it rather than reflective of the county/municipal and geographic lines the state constitution requires. Observe the November election where traditionally GOP county and local seats - some held by GOP for 100 years - flipped Democratic. Poorly reported - piece reflects GOP talking points not reality. Talking about my region, which is now now reflected by districts which lean Dem because that reflects the population - period.
Right, his and the neighboring 7th saw some big shifts to Dems in local and county offices in Nov. ‘17 election. His and the 7th were already looking like possible Dem gains before the GOP designed gerrymanders were tossed out by the court.
Spot on.
Just want to add this gloss: in no reasonable world could this new map be said to favor Democrats. If the map had been in place in 2016, Trump-Clinton split would have been 10-8 in favor of Trump.
C’mon. It’s Caitlin.
“Plus I think there is a lot of hate out there, from the left especially, and it’s a very angry environment.”
Ya motherfucker . We’re mad as hell at Republicans who need to cheat to win,Put party before country ALWAYS and will not stop a deranged individual in the White House.
Yellow bellied lowlife douchebag
“Plus I think there is a lot of hate out there, from the left especially…"
This sicko really has brass balls. I imagine he’s pissed he’s going to have to actually work for a living now, and his golden goose is cooked!
He’s my asshole rep. I’m only disappointed I can’t vote him out now. He was going to have a tough re-election before redistricting because he blew off many a town hall. My artist friend made a life sized replica of him that was taken to town halls to face the ire.
That is a pretty good “LOSERS” excuse.
He can’t handle the idea of a challenge or being exposed to what he really represents.
The POG party.
GOP = greedy ole party
POG = Pathetic ole Gimmicks party.
That’s the second time this month that I read a TPM article that ignores the idea that a redistricting could have been done in fairness, instead forcing a false equivalence that any redistricting either “favors” one party or the other. David Lieb did it too:
Democrats and Republicans both are attempting to gain control of as many governors’ offices and legislatures as possible in advance of redistricting, because the party that controls that process can draw lines that give it an electoral edge for the decade to come.
Seriously, I don’t understand why TPM is so casually framing it this way. If you have proof that Democrats are counter-gerrymandering, present the facts. Otherwise, please stop carrying Republicans’ water for them.
