Discussion: GOP Rep.: I've Never Seen Professional Town Hall Protesters

Among GOPers talking sense and being rational is a bug, not a feature.

I attended Sen. Bill Cassidy’s (R-LA) town meeting yesterday. The people at the meeting appeared to be local people or from places nearby, and they asked intelligent and thoughtful questions, once Cassidy gave them a chance. I doubt anyone in the crowd was bused in.

The crowd was not rowdy, but they were clearly annoyed by Cassidy’s attempt to run out the clock by speaking too long in a meeting that lasted only an hour. My patience ran out, and I called out to the senator that he needed to give the people there time to speak.

Cover of Jackson Browne’s 1986 “Lives in the Balance” album. Kinda where we are, and, I guess where my head is right now.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said … that “protesting has become a profession now.”

Yeah, and so has boot licking.

Yeah, and the ones who can are able to do so only because they are fortunate enough to represent a district that includes one of their big-money donors.

you were supposed to tell me NC is going reliably blue. the album title is certainly in tune with the times and jackson browne is fine any old time.

It’s kinda weird when you run across a Repub like this these days. Not sure what to say, except, gee …. a public servant who wants to listen to his constituents. Fancy that.

Well, maybe something good is finally happening in Wisconsin:

It’s called filibustering and it is a Senator’s only job skill…

ok, I’m sorry, but how is “organizing a protest” somehow now a bad thing? if it isn’t organized, it’s just a mob, and surely “President” Trump doesn’t want unruly mobs out there, does he?

I am in agreement. I think the notion of ‘paid protesters’ is another carefully crafted label. But here is what I see as the real message…

“It’s important to reach out to constituents, to hear from them, and I think it’s important for my constituents to hear from me,” Lance said. “Perhaps a majority in the audience were not those who had voted for me previously. But I try to represent everybody, Shep. Not only Republicans and independents but Democrats as well.”

Elected officials are supposed to represent everybody in their district. Even when it is not in line with what their party wants. If/when Obamacare is repealed - replaced, it will be ‘the people’ that lose their healthcare coverage… not republicans or independents or democrats, but ‘the people’.

Well, we’ll see.

I was never a huge fan, but this song spoke to me in 1986 and has ever since.

In “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them,” which I think was Franken’s last book before he got into politics, he described the difference between liberal patriotism and conservative patriotism as the difference between how an adult loves a spouse and how a four year old loves his mommy. And, while I was laughing, I instantly connected it to this one.

One of my very favorite albums, and that song in particular still brings on the tears…

eta: Tears of rage, mostly.

It’s also been a standard Republican tactic since the Newt-era (at least).

Keep talking, run out the clock, and suddenly there’s no time for a response. They all do it…

Hey. I’ve tried like hell to get hired. Where the hell is the job posting? I need the money.

Issa was on Bill Mauer last night. Issa actually managed to sound a bit like a Democrat, as hard as that is to believe. His recent encounter with near defeat in the recent election must have made a very strong impression.
