Discussion: GOP Officials, Former US Attorneys Push Back Efforts To Discredit Mueller

The GOPer’s loved Mueller before they hated him. That’s called “political” and “crass.”

You can’t send letters to the corrupt demanding they act lawfully and expect anything but their disdain. This is the Trumpers and the Roypublicans trying to save their asses.

The GOP is scared shitless about what’s coming at them, and their feckless orange leader…

Yes. When’s the last time a sternly worded letter worked on a mafioso? They only respect and respond to a punch to the face.

Trump is using traditions, behavioral and professional norms against the IC and other government officials, while respecting no rules himself.

If there are Republicans interfering with Mueller’s investigation of Russian ties to the Trump administration, why are they being held accountable? Shouldn’t there be some hearings as to Whether or not their impeding this investigation. You know I guess we could wait till the Democrats take that Congress in 2018 to start investigating it we can hold hearings to even if Mueller’s investigation is over and there’s no evidence of collusion or anything on trumps part. We can stay hearings on these Republicans that are interfering with his investigation no matter what the outcome is. Isn’t that what they’re doing to Tootie Hillary? What goes around comes around Bubba.

No, we need to investigate Benghazi Uranium One. Gowdy, Gohmert, Gaetz, and Nunes are going to find where that evil witch hid all the glowing goo and prove she’s the one who’s really in bed with Putin.

Quite true. But… I am having troubles seeing the end game, here. I mean, clearly, Mr. Trump believes that firing Mueller will somehow save his backside from impeachment and/or prison, and, for my part, I see only one way for him to avoid prison. Consider: If he fires Mueller, it’s not as if all the things that Mueller has discovered will suddenly vanish. Mueller and Comey made their reputations on leaving trails behind themselves. Even if the current Justice Department attempts to sweep it all under the rug, someone is going to find it, later. Unless Trump declares himself Supreme Orange Beloved Dear Leader for Life, and gets that to stick, once he leaves the White House, he’s in for a long stay at Leavenworth.

When Devin Nunes first pulled his ‘secret agent man’ act with the White House, I recall reading that his district was red (but not deep red). Later, as he dodged town hall meetings I watched interviews with constituents who were giving Trump a chance - and assume Nunes was just doing his job. All of that was back in the Spring.

I would love to know what the landscape of the district and its sentiments are now (even before the realization of how badly constituents will be screwed by the SALT restrictions on their taxes). If ever a congressmen deserved to feel the wrath of constituents who no longer feel represented - it is Nunes.

The 22 former U.S. attorneys, who served under presidents from Richard Nixon through Barack Obama, say it is “critical” to the “interests of justice and public trust to ensure that those charged with conducting complex investigations are allowed to do their jobs free from interference or fear of reprisal.”

Looking for anything in there that Trump actually cares about …

Seeking Mueller’s removal “would have severe repercussions for Americans’ sense of justice here at home and for our reputation for fairness around the world,” they wrote in a letter to President Donald Trump on Friday that was coordinated by Georgetown Law’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection.

Still looking…

Another letter signed by 20 former members of Congress and other top U.S. officials says efforts to discredit Mueller’s work “undermine the institutions that protect the rule of law and so our nation.”

Nope, I got nothin’. Trump cares about Trump. Our international reputation? Pretty clear evidence that he cares not at all. Public trust? Two words utterly devoid of meaning to him. The rule of law? His contempt for that is what Mueller’s probe is all about.

It’s all about Trump. Trump, Trump, Trump. Those letters, fine and noble-sounding though they may be, might as well be yesterday’s little league box scores as far as he cares.

When fellow Republican Mueller took over the Trump/Russia investigation:

“Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity.” – Newt Gingrich.

“I view it as good and what we’ve been waiting for and I think it sends the right message that Mueller will go where the facts lead." – Rep. Darrell Issa.

"He will serve with integrity and professionalism, and will conduct a thorough and fair investigation.” – House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte.

“The personalities involved are much less important to me than the underlying facts.” – Rep. Trey Gowdy.

“I commend DOJ for bringing in an independent voice to help bring clarity to this situation.” – Sen. Orrin Hatch.

“My priority has been to ensure thorough and independent investigations are allowed to follow the facts wherever they may lead. That is what we’ve been doing here in the House. The addition of Robert Mueller as special counsel is consistent with this goal, and I welcome his role at the Department of Justice.” – Speaker Paul Ryan

But once they realized he was gonna take down their whole criminal enterprise of a party…

Not so much.

Hey, you have to take into account that Mr. Mueller was appointed as FBI Chief by only a 98 to 0 vote of the Senate.

What did those 0 votes know that we don’t know? Inquiring minds want to know…

Isn’t sad that the only way the Repubs can get something passed is relying on something like a Trump?

As if FACTS and LEARNED OPINION mean anything to the Trump Crime Family.
Why, this borders on being TRUTHFUL and we can’t have THAT in Congress, no sir!

I suspect that some of the signers are people desperately trying to save some shred of traditional conservative doctrine, and respectability. I doubt that they will succeed, but I wish them well. I disagree with (true) conservatives on most matters, but we need to have two sides in serious debates. Unfortunately, what passes for “conservatism” today is reaction all too often coupled with racism, cynicism and belief in the divine right of wealth.

Read this Brokaw commentary at DKos about the 180 some republicans have done in their opinions about Mueller:

“[Trump] watches [F&F] because it reinforces what he believes,” Brokaw said. “Fox News…is on a jihad right now” against institutions of the government. “Newt Gingrigh looking into the camera and saying the FBI is a corrupt organization – three months earlier he’d said Bob Mueller is one of the great, distinguished public servants we have.”

“So, we’re at war here,” Brokaw said.”
