I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some members that would like to see a shutdown in order to demonstrate their conservative bona fides. Despite evidence to the contrary they believe the electorate desires leadership that embraces their philosophy, and by being arch conservatives they are “doing the people’s will”.

It’s a little bit of an assumption that they would be able to screw up even the most basic of budgeting and then expect to come back after a national election with “more leverage”.

Absolutely. No matter what some folks may say but the GOP patriotism is fake, pure BS. I don’t buy it one bit.
Also, there are those who know the irreparable damage a shutdown would do to the Party right before elections.

Really? Because just based on the experience of everything Conservatives have stood for my entire adult life and most of my adolescence, since I was 15 in 1980 - i.e. for at least the past 36 years - that’s all that Conservatism has ever been about, starting with Reagan’s tripling of America’s debt (if not earlier).
I’m a big believer in the dictum that words are defined by usage. So if Conservatism has come to mean living on debt and welching on it, then Conservatives have no one to blame but themselves.
Some might say that what we need is a new word for the principles that America Conservatives pretended they were for but never acted on - things like promoting and preserving liberty, and balancing the budget - but we already have a word for those people. Several words. They’re called Democrats, and Liberals, and Progressives.

What should we demand the Media do first, put the Freedom in Freedom Caucus in quotes, or stop blaming both parties for the the obstructive gridlock in Washington? Or call out bullshit on every GOP candidate who claims that people need to vote for them to stop business as usual in Washington by those gosh danged insiders? You would think with all the Ivy Leaguers in the Media and all the offspring of Governors, National Security Advisers and Meet The Press hosts, that they could figure this all out by themselves.
